Simple Ways To Plan Your House Improvement Project ? Approaches

Home improvement takes quite a bit of preparation, and the quality of your planning can help you get the results you want. Very often, when homeowners rush into repairs or renovations without thinking it through, they run into unexpected problems. To help you out, we wrote this article to show you several guidelines in regard to planning a home improvement project the right way.

Home renovations are fun, but depending upon the size of the project itself, you may need to hire help along the way. Don?t hire the first person that comes your way! It is important that you find out more about them before you pay them a dime or have them come on the job site. If you need to hire a contractor, make sure you get several estimates from many different sources. Contractors that are easy to work with, that offer you the lowest bid, are the ones that you want to find as you sort through the different estimates. Depending upon the size of the job, the contractor that you choose should be able to hire additional workers if necessary. So instead of hiring different people individually, this general contractor will be able to do this for you and supervise the work to get it done right.

Hopefully, just as with so many other aspects regarding home improvement, you will need to pay more consideration to some things than others. But in the final analysis you are the only person who can correctly make that call. Of course there is rather a lot more to be learned. The balance of this read holds much more that will help your particular situation. Some of these tips really are critical to your understanding, and there is even more going further than what is about to be covered.

If you?re looking to improve the overall look and feel of your home, don?t ignore the possibility of adding storage space. Your home can look better than ever by simply adding storage space inside. The reason this works is because you are giving yourself more room by putting excess clutter into the storage area. It is possible to accomplish this easily. Additional space can be created quickly by adding shelves in your closet. Storage sheds are very popular and can be used for this reason. Those of you that have a basement, or perhaps an attic, can remodel this area of your home for this purpose. Extra clutter that is removed will help make your home better than ever.

It is not recommended to do any sort of renovation that will not add a level of value to your home. When you are making decisions to do home renovations; even though your place is yours at the moment; you may decide to sell later. People all have different tastes; so it would be impossible to figure out what may appeal to the next owner of your home. Some items, such as a swimming pool, can actually be a turnoff to potential buyers because they?ll worry that it will cost too much to maintain. The best policy in general is to make home improvements that you really want, rather than thinking about resale value, unless of course you plan to sell your home in the near future.

Hopefully this article has helped you understand what you need to do in regard to any home improvement project you are considering doing. The decisions that you make will affect things like how your home will increase in value, how it will look, and how long the project will actually take to complete. Home improvement projects can be difficult, and making the right decisions early on is important in regard to the success of what you aspire to do.

?Innocence of Muslims?: The film that sparked deadly embassy attacks

A man walks inside the U.S. Consulate, which was attacked and set on fire by gunmen yesterday. (Esam Al-Fetori??A low-quality film mocking the Muslim Prophet Muhammad reportedly sparked some Libyan Islamist extremists to attack the U.S. Embassy in Benghazi, killing U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other diplomats. Earlier on Tuesday, a group of Egyptians scaled the walls of the U.S. Embassy in Cairo and tore down the American flag, angry over the same movie.

So what is this film, and who made it?

The English-language film, portions of which have been online since July, attracted attention in Egypt only over the past few days when someone posted a segment of the movie that had been dubbed into Arabic, according to the New York Times. Some Egyptian TV hosts began airing clips of the film over and over, portraying it as a Coptic Christian and American plot to denigrate the prophet. (Morris Sadek, a Coptic Christian from Egypt and critic of Islam who now lives in the United States, told AP he recently began promoting the two-hour film, which might also explain its rise out of obscurity.) The amateur-seeming?"Innocence of Muslims" film shows the Prophet Muhammad as a homosexual who endorses extramarital sex and pedophilia. (Many Muslims consider physical or visual representations of Muhammad to be blasphemous.)

Though at first it was unclear who made the movie, the Wall Street Journal tracked down and interviewed Israeli-American real estate developer Sam Bacile, who claimed that he wrote, directed and produced the film. The 52-year-old Bacile told the Journal that he made the film to portray Islam as a hateful religion:

"Islam is a cancer," he said in a telephone interview from his home. "The movie is a political movie. It's not a religious movie."

Mr. Bacile said he raised $5 million from about 100 Jewish donors, whom he declined to identify. Working with about 60 actors and 45 crew members, he said he made the two-hour movie in three months last year in California.

Bacile told the AP that he is now in hiding, and that his full movie has only been shown once, to a nearly empty theater in Hollywood. The AP said Bacile was "apologetic" about the ambassador's death, but blamed lax security and the extremists who perpetrated the attack. "I feel the security system (at the embassies) is no good," he said. "America should do something to change it." But the story added that anonymous "Israeli officials" said there was no record of a Sam Bacile being a citizen of Israel, raising questions about whether Bacile is a pseudonym.

The inflammatory Florida pastor Terry Jones, best known for burning a copy of Islam's holy book in 2011, has also been publicizing the film. President Barack Obama condemned the attacks in a statement Wednesday, but also made an oblique reference to the "Innocence of Muslims" film. "While the United States rejects efforts to denigrate the religious beliefs of others, we must all unequivocally oppose the kind of senseless violence that took the lives of these public servants," Obama said. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton also referenced the movie. "Some have sought to justify this vicious behavior, along with the protest that took place at our embassy in Cairo yesterday, as a response to inflammatory material posted on the Internet," Clinton said. "America's commitment to religious tolerance goes back to the very beginning of our nation. But let me be clear. There is no justification for this. None."

(AP) ? President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama are at Arlington National Cemetery visiting the graves of service members killed in Afghanistan and Iraq.

The visit to the burial ground across the Potomac River from the White House is part of the president's observance of the 11th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

The Obamas quietly walked between rows of graves at Section 60, which contains the remains of the most recent war dead. Pausing at several graves, Obama placed presidential "challenge" coins at the base of the headstones. The first headstone listed the names of 10 victims of an Oct. 26, 2009, helicopter crash in Afghanistan.

Earlier, the Obamas placed a wreath at the Pentagon and observed a moment of silence on the White House South Lawn.

(AP) ? A businessman who gunned down a police officer at his suburban Detroit home held authorities at bay for hours with an arsenal of high-powered rifles and other weapons before finally killing himself, officials said Tuesday.

Officers were responding to a report of a possible suicide attempt Sunday night at the home in West Bloomfield Township when Ricky Coley shot Officer Pat O'Rourke, authorities said. About 15 families were evacuated from nearby homes during the subsequent 20-hour standoff that ended when Coley was found dead in his bed Monday evening.

More than 1,000 people attend a memorial vigil for O'Rourke outside the township police headquarters Tuesday night.

Sheriff Michael Bouchard told reporters Tuesday that the standoff lasted so long because relatives had warned investigators about his weapons, and because of a barrage of gunfire from Coley.

"It appeared to be just a battle mindset," Bouchard said. "He had the firepower. He had barricaded windows and covered doors. And the way he was firing ? probably because part of his military background ? he knew the best way to fire and not be spotted by a sniper."

Coley, a military veteran, had "a fully automatic Uzi" in addition to high-powered rifles, handguns, knives, a bullet-resistant vest and protective goggles, Bouchard said.

Coley, 50, was recently divorced and had been ordered to leave the home by Monday. He also faced financial and legal turmoil, including a lawsuit from federal authorities accusing him of mishandling employee's insurance funds. West Bloomfield Township police said they had also been called to Coley's home about a month ago because he was reportedly suicidal.

He killed himself with a gunshot to the mouth, according to a report released Tuesday by Dr. Cheryl Loewe of the Oakland County medical examiner's office.

Coley owned CNC Holdings, a private equity firm that bought 51 percent interest in Translogic Auto Carriers in 2008. Translogic, an 8-year-old company based in the Michigan Thumb-area town of Bad Axe, hauled new vehicles from automakers to dealerships. It had more than 200 drivers and employed dozens of others in the community.

Coley, who had worked for Ford Motor Co. and General Motors, believed he knew what automakers needed, said business partner Lyn Tetreau, who owned the other 49 percent of Translogic.

"Coley wanted to be involved in everything," Tetreau, 45, told The Associated Press on Tuesday. "I was the minority owner. He was the majority. He demanded more so than suggested what we do. Coley and I had a totally different direction. We did a lot of bumping heads."

Tetreau said Coley fired him twice as company president, leading Tetreau to go to court so he could stay in charge of operations.

The U.S. auto industry was collapsing and the nation was in the Great Recession. By 2010, Translogic had filed for bankruptcy, despite Tetreau's putting about a $1 million of his own money into the company.

But Coley appeared to be making money off Translogic even when bills weren't being paid, Tetreau said.

"He put himself on a huge salary, working a couple of days each week while barking out orders," Tetreau said. "Coley was trying to leverage as much capital as he could for himself. Myself and the staff became puppets, and he was pulling the strings."

The U.S. Labor Department recently filed a lawsuit accusing Coley of mishandling money meant to cover employee insurance. The lawsuit says Coley also transferred $342,000 from Translogic to himself or his affiliates.

Tetreau said that was just one factor in Coley's troubles.

"I don't believe what has taken place with Coley was based on his life at Translogic," Tetreau said. "I think he had financial troubles and couldn't get his hands on much cash and was not being able to control his personal life."

Coley had lost his home as part of a divorce judgment. His ex-wife, Deniece Coley, also was to receive $190 each week in child support for their 7-year-old son. They were married in 1998 and separated June 12, when Deniece Coley moved out.

In filing for divorce, she claimed Ricky Coley was "at fault for the breakdown of the marriage due to his infidelity, physical, mental, emotional and psychological abuse." She said he had attacked her on two occasions.

Deniece Coley could not be reached for comment Tuesday. A man who answered the phone at a number listed for her in the divorce filing declined comment before hanging up.

Residents who live in the upscale neighborhood where the standoff happened were back home Tuesday.

Jeannie Zimbalatti pointed to a bullet hole in one of her bedrooms. She said her family was "trying to reconcile how we knew Rick to what we were seeing on TV."

"We were unaware of what was transpiring in his personal life," she said. "I'd had conversations with him about his business, and we knew things were tough. But there were no signs of any of this coming. He was an incredibly nice person to us."

All eyes on Draghi's bond rescue plan for Europe

(AP) ? European Central bank President Mario Draghi gets another chance Thursday to spell out how the bank intends to rescue the 17 countries that use the euro from financial disaster.

Expectations have been high since late July when the ECB head vowed to do "whatever it takes" to hold the eurozone together. The following week, on Aug. 2, Draghi announced the broad outlines of a plan to buy government bonds to help out eurozone countries struggling to manage their debt.

Until then, countries such as Spain and Italy had seen their borrowing costs ? reflected in the interest rates on bonds they sell ? rise to unmanageable levels. Investors were worried the two countries could soon get to a point where they couldn't afford to handle their finances and be pushed into asking for a bailout.

That has already happened three times in the eurozone ? with Greece, Ireland and Portugal. The worry is that Spain and Italy are too big to bail out. If those countries fail to pay their debts on time, it could spark a financial crisis that could see the eurozone break up, spreading turmoil throughout the global economy.

Analysts say Draghi's comments Thursday are likely to be constrained by the fact that the ECB is still working on its plans. The ECB chief has to strike a delicate balance: promise and reveal enough to keep markets happy, while nudging Europe's politicians to do more.

Here is a look at what Draghi and the ECB have been working on and what to look out for on Thursday:

?BOND-BUYING STRATEGIES:

By buying bonds on the open market, the ECB can drive up the prices for a country's bonds. That brings down their interest rate ? or yield ? and makes it less expensive for countries to borrow money. The ECB theoretically has no limit on the money it can use for its bond-buying plan. As a central bank, it can "print money" to pay for the bonds by simply adding to banks' reserve accounts.

How much it spends on bonds sends a message to the markets. Too much and it could be criticized for violating the EU treaty provision that forbids it from financing governments directly. Too little and investors think that ECB is only half-heartedly attempting to solve the eurozone's problems. A previous bond-buying program started in May 2010 piled up over ?210 billion ($264.16 billion) but was too limited to decisively lower yields.

One option for the ECB is to set an interest rate ceiling ? once a country's yields hit a certain point, it would step in and buy the bonds. However, while such a strategy would show the ECB has a level at which it would intervene, it would also tie its hands, forcing it to defend that red line or lose credibility.

The mere announcement last month that the ECB might intervene has already sent the yields down for Spain and Italy. Spain's yield on its 10-year bonds, for example, has fallen from a high of 7.54 per cent in July to 6.51 per cent this week. This is a move in the right direction but still much higher than the more financially secure eurozone countries, such as Germany which has a 1.4 per cent yield.

Anticipation grew even more intense when Draghi skipped a key central bank conference in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, because of the workload ahead of Thursday's meeting.

?POTENTIAL PITFALLS:

Draghi has to tread a fine line ? not only does he have to keep the markets from panicking and pushing bond yields even higher, but he also has to play a political game. First he has to make sure that the ECB's 23-member governing council is on his side. This might not be easy when Germany's central Bundesbank ? an influential member of the council because of the size of Germany's financial commitment to the eurozone ? has so far been critical of the bond purchase plans. Its head, Jens Weidmann, has warned that governments could become addicted to the help and avoid making unpopular spending cuts and tax increases to get their debts under control.

Draghi will also have to keep governments in line if the bond-buying program is to succeed. When he announced his plan last month, Draghi stressed that governments who want help must sign up for a to-do list of conditions. But once the ECB has stepped in, will countries stick to their commitments after the pressure has been taken off their finances? The history of the eurozone crisis is littered with broken promises and missed targets.

One weapon in the ECB's arsenal could be halting the bond purchases, turning up the heat by letting borrowing costs rise again. This is a risky option. It would send a strong message to the countries being helped out but it could reignite market panic and send yields spiraling.

Economists have suggested Draghi may push for a tough version of enforcement. That could involve bringing in the International Monetary Fund to monitor a government's progress.

"Everyone loves a generous central banker... There's a tight balancing act here, in which the ECB should provide a safety net, but not give too much away for free," wrote Rabobank analyst Jan Lambregts in a note to investors.

?WHAT TO EXPECT THURSDAY:

The only thing that's certain about Thursday is that analysts and politicians will pore over every word uttered by Draghi.

Rather than giving detailed plans about how the ECB is ready to start bond-buying Thursday, Draghi is more likely to lay down the law. Politicians will probably be given another stern warning that they'll have to abide by strict conditions if they want help. The pressure will be put back on leaders such as Spain's Rajoy and Italy's Premier Mario Monti to act first. Only once governments have applied to the eurozone's emergency bailout funds for help, will the ECB get going with its bond buying.

While the focus of attention will be on what the ECB president will ? and will not ? say about the bank's bond-buying program, the ECB could also use another measure to help strengthen the eurozone's finances ? interest rates. Economists are divided on whether a quarter-point cut in the ECB's benchmark interest rate to a new record low of 0.5 percent might be on the cards.

Analyst Carsten Brzeski at ING said that "not all the detail might be revealed this week, perhaps because there is not yet full agreement within the governing council, but maybe also to keep pressure on" indebted governments in southern Europe.

Jacques Cailloux, chief European economist at Nomura International, said he expects Draghi to give "almost no detail" on Thursday. Instead Draghi will assure markets that the ECB "stands ready to intervene and to reiterate that this will only come when the call for help has been made."

Draghi's remarks will be "with a view of keeping maximum flexibility and reflect that they might not be fully prepared just now, and to not get cornered with very specific targets."

In six years, childcare company has gone from part-time venture to 35 staff.

Baby Thomas is less than a month old but mum Cecilia Robinson is already scanning the listings at her Au Pair Link business for the perfect person to help care for him.

Her superstitious business partner and husband, James Robinson, had forbidden her to study Au Pair Link?s database until Thomas, their first child, was born this month.

Finding the right au pair is essential for Cecilia?s return to work, part-time at first, early in the New Year.

The company that matches au pairs (live-in nannies from overseas) with New Zealand families has seen extraordinary growth since Cecilia founded it nearly six years ago.

By the end of this year some 1000 au pairs will be on Au Pair Link?s books. That?s up 600 per cent on the number of au pairs placed with New Zealand families in 2009 and puts it in the top 5 per cent of au pair agencies in the world.

James says the company aims to become the third largest home-based early childhood care provider in New Zealand, behind Porse and Barnardos, by the end of the year ? ?a very realistic goal?.

In time Au Pair Link?s goal is to be the largest au pair agency in the world, and eventually the largest home-based provider in New Zealand, says James.

The recession hasn?t dented the company?s growth, he says.

?In fact our business has really been going from strength to strength as a result of the affordability of the concept. It?s dedicated one-on-one childcare but still so affordable.?

Having three children under 5 in daycare or with a nanny could cost up to $800 a week, while an au pair with an early childhood qualification would come to $300, excluding PAYE tax.

Assistance with older children or babies starts at $120 a week.

On top of the au pair?s wages, and tax, clients must provide a room and meals, pay a $900 enrolment fee and a completion bonus when the au pair?s contract finishes.

The real game changer for Au Pair Link came in 2009 when it became a Ministry of Education licensed home-based early childhood provider, says James.

Although it was a significant process to go through, it means parents can get access to the 20 hours of government-subsidised early childhood education funding.

?It meant that au pairs, which were traditionally perceived as a more informal type of childcare, were actually supported by fully qualified teachers to teach a curriculum and provide resources to families,? he says.

While Au Pair Link is an early childhood business, it also operates in the youth work and travel market, forming a partnership with STA Travel to promote its au pair programme.

Strong overseas links, including membership of the International Au Pair Association, are vital for sourcing au pairs from a range of countries and running the required police, character and health checks.

?Having really good partners is really important because you can generate as much awareness in New Zealand as you like and host families can be really keen to get an au pair but if you don?t have the au pairs and the supply it means nothing,? says James.

The couple also recognised early on that they needed to invest in the right people to help the company grow.

?They always say: employ people who are smarter than you, and I firmly believe that,? says Cecilia.

Au Pair Link began as a part-time venture while Cecilia was studying law, but within a year it had 10 staff and now has 35, including a general manager.

They have created an advisory board made up of former Telecom head Theresa Gattung and Lee Mathias, deputy chair of the Auckland District Health Board, a move Cecilia says has had a huge impact.

?They taught us a lot about business and about what is really important for a business.?

Cecilia approached Gattung after hearing her speak at a function several years ago. Gattung was interested in helping the fledgling company but wanted to be involved as part of the advisory board, preferring to see all the numbers and have complete disclosure, rather than being a mentor.

Cecilia says she loves Gattung?s ability to cut straight to the important issues, even though she has no experience in the early childhood business, nor any children herself.

?Theresa and Lee have really stretched us as business people and continue to challenge us and make us think outside the box,? Cecilia says.

For now it is wee Thomas occupying his parents? time as they adjust to parenthood.

?I?ve just been a mum now for two weeks, so it?s still early days yet, but it?s really important that women, in particular. embrace opportunities, whether it?s in their personal life or in their career,? says Cecilia. ?You can have a family and a successful career. It?s completely doable to do both.?

Ways to lose weight fast

Looking for a way to lose weight quickly? Then be prepared for a strict exercise and diet regime! Here?s the truth: most diets don?t really work and exercising alone is usually not enough to lose weight.

fast weight lossHow weight loss works

Put simply, if you want to lose weight, you have to use more energy than you get from food. Recent technological advances have made our lives a lot more comfortable, which is making us spend increasingly more hours in front of TV screens or a computer monitors. That is one of the main reasons why obesity rates have skyrocketed in the Western countries.

Most diets don?t work

Most popular diets can?t provide long-term results. Here?s why:

  • They place no emphasis on long term eating habits, instead focusing on a strict diet regime for a few weeks or months.
  • Most weight loss diets cut out entire food groups, making it incredibly difficult for your body to tolerate the changes. Once the diet is over, most people fall back to their old eating habits.
  • Some of these diets appear to work fast because they deprive you of liquids. Your body loses water mass (which is mostly stored in your muscles) quickly, but these results don?t last.
  • By severely limiting food intake, some popular diets can leave you deprived of essential nutrients and minerals, causing various health conditions to develop.

What are the quickest ways to lose weight?

You can lose weight fairly quickly using an intensive exercise routine combined with a healthy eating plan. That?s about it.

The key thing here is this: if you want to successfully lose weight and keep it off, you must find a way to transform your current lifestyle into a much healthier one. That means getting plenty of regular exercise and eating healthy foods at all times.

Now, eating healthy doesn?t mean the same thing as going on a diet. Healthy eating plans encourage people to create good long-term eating habits by slowly changing their daily diets. This is crucial if you want to stay at a healthy weight for a long time. Here are a few tips to help you on your journey:

  • Don?t force strict dietary changes on yourself. Make slow changes in order to avoid emotional resistance, which normally leads to relapse.
  • Keep a detailed log of everything you eat. You will be surprised how many calories you actually consume in a normal day.
  • Try to cook at home as often as possible. This way you?ll be able to choose what ingredients go into your meals.

There?s a lot more to successful weight loss than this, but these basics should have you well on your way. If you?d like to learn more about diets and various weight loss products, check out SlimmingToday.

No, you won?t be seeing the world through rose-colored glasses. Next month, State Street really will be bathed in a rosy glow.

The famous Bristol sign will light up pink Oct. 1 in honor of breast cancer patients and to support research and preventative methods to fight the disease. Proceeds from sponsoring the 1,300 pink bulbs and a concert slated to be held later in the month will be shared with the Wellmont Cancer Institute and the Tri-Cities affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

?It seems somehow we?ve all been touched? by breast cancer, said Cheryl Youland, executive director of the affiliate. ?[The lights will be] a great visual and a great statement. ? We very much appreciate the community coming together to raise money for breast cancer awareness.?

The bulbs will be available for sponsorship through Sept. 21, and there?s already been a positive response from the community about the project, said Jennifer Wilson, director of communications for the Bristol Chamber of Commerce.

?At Food City Family Race Night, we sold quite a few bulbs,? she said. ?Businesses are sponsoring 50 and 60 bulbs at a time, because an employee has breast cancer, and every employee has sponsored a bulb. It?s been very heartwarming and overwhelming.?

Both Bristol Virginia Utilities and Bristol Tennessee Essential Services, which alternate years maintaining the sign, will work to change the normal white bulbs to pink ones at the end of September, Wilson said. The sign will be dark for a few days before the grand reveal Oct. 1.

?It?s going to make such a powerful statement when the light is flipped,? she said.

Sue Lindenbusch, vice president of Wellmont Cancer Institute, said she hopes the blush of pink on State Street will serve as a reminder of the importance of early screenings and early breast cancer detection. The funds gathered from the breast cancer events in Bristol will go to the cancer center?s patient care fund, she said, which helps patients with everything from their care to their electric bills.

?This allows us to be a resource,? she said. ?Some ? things aren?t covered by insurance. Not every patient has the money. We want to take one ? worry away from our patients. We want to make sure we identify resources for our patients. We don?t want a lot of barriers in the way.?

The local Komen affiliate will use the money as part of its funds to help patients, too, Youland said. She said 75 percent of the money will stay locally in the 23 counties the Komen affiliate serves. In the past six years, since the affiliate was founded, more than 9,000 women received mammograms because of the Komen group, she said. And 110 breast cancers were identified out of that group.

?We tend to think of things in terms of mammograms,? Youland said, explaining the group?s fundraising and expenditure process. ?Through a grant program, a mammogram costs about $150.?

The changing of the sign is the first of a month-long list of events geared toward raising money to combat breast cancer, Wilson said. An all-women concert series will be held downtown Oct. 20. Details about the concert are expected to be released later this week.

The events are planned around reaching younger women, who might not be as concerned about their risk for breast cancer, Wilson said.

?With the whole event, we?re trying to reach that younger audience, who think they?re invincible,? she said. ?They don?t take the time to do all the self-checks.?

Youland said she can?t wait to see the newly pink sign next month.

?I think just the lights and turning them on will remind everybody [about breast cancer] and help them to stop it in its tracks,? she said.

Auto Insurance Advice That Anyone Can Follow - Car Articles, News ...

Throughout life, you will come to points where you have to insure various items to protect their value in the case of an accident. Of all the insurance payments, you will have to make. Auto insurance will be one of the largest and most financially demanding options you must decide upon. Make sure you abide by some basic tips when you finally get to that point.

When looking into auto insurance, you need to think about how much insurance you will need. Each state has a minimum amount of coverage each driver needs to maintain, so be sure to use that as a starting point. If your car is worth more, then you need more insurance. Similarly, if your car is a beater, chances are your insurance costs will be significantly lower.

You need auto insurance to drive your car. Did you know that if add a lot of mileage to your car each year, your car insurance may increase? It is important to keep your mileage down to keep your auto insurance from increasing. The auto insurance company determines that if you are driving a lot each year, the chances of being involved in a wreck is higher.

If you have a bad driving record, obtaining insurance may be difficult and it may be very expensive. Be sure to shop around and ask for advice from insurance agents. If you have to take out a costly insurance policy, ask the insurer what you can do to work towards getting a better insurance rate next year.

When dealing with an auto insurance claim, always keep all of the information related to the claim with you at all times, in a pocket or a purse. Claim settlements are often slowed down by the client not having information handy with the insurance company contacts them, meaning they'll have to wait until that evening to get things moving.

People with clean driving records, will pay the least in auto insurance premiums. Keep your record clear of tickets, moving violations, and accident reports if you want to lower your premium or keep it inexpensive. A single accident or ticket will likely increase the amount you have to pay.

An often overlooked auto insurance tip is to always investigate the experience and financial standing of any potential insurer. By checking into the background of a prospective coverage provider, you can gain confidence in their ability to fulfill their obligations to policyholders in the event they must file a claim.

Though simple, the tips listed above could save hundreds and thousands of dollars per year on expensive auto insurance payments. The point is, take your time and calculate your costs carefully. Get ahead of the curve and be prepared for what you will need to pay before you even go to get your vehicle. Knowledge and research is the key to saving.

At AAA Carolinas you will get a full spectrum of services including tune-ups.

Wiring Your Small Business | The Business Edition

The Internet is the marketplace of the future. In order for your small business to be seen, you need to establish a web presence and get your workplace online. By following these tips, you will have your company up to speed with the 21st century in no time at all.

ESTABLISHING A WEB SITE

Consider using a virtual hosting service that offers automated installation of software packages. Look into content management systems and decide which one is right for your application. A popular choice is WordPress, due to its flexibility, rich feature set and ease of use. Remember to only buy as much bandwidth as you expect to need, plus a little headroom. Try to get a virtual host that offers a low latency connection to where most of your clients and customers will be connecting from.

WIRING UP THE OFFICE

Most small businesses do not need expensive Internet connection options such as T-carrier lines. Instead, a DOCSIS/Cable connection will get the job done while also leaving some room to grow. Most small businesses do not require more than 16 megabits of downlink bandwidth and 4 megabits of upstream bandwidth. The only exception is if you need to frequently transfer very large files, make heavy use of video teleconferencing, stream multimedia content or have more than five concurrent heavy users.

Networking your small business is simple. All you will need is a DOCSIS/Cable, Fiber Optic or DSL modem, a router and some Category 5 or Category 6 Ethernet cable. Use switches to expand your network whenever possible. Hubs retransmit signals to computers other than the intended destination. This increases the likelihood of collisions, reduced throughput and other problems.

In the event that you choose to use a wireless network, ensure that it is secure. Use a wireless router with the latest firmware from the manufacturer. Secure the web interface with a strong password that includes uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers and special characters. Encrypt your network with the latest security protocol that you can. A good choice is WPA2. Use a long and complex network key in order to maximize security. Frequently change this key to prevent anyone from cracking it. Consider implementing MAC address filtering so that only authorized devices can connect to the wireless network.

If you need to run new cable drops for your company, the most economical approach is to make your own cables. Buying pre-assembled cables is expensive and messy. Category 5 and 6 cable can be purchased in bulk on a spool. The RJ-45 connector heads can also be purchased in bulk very cheaply. Run your Ethernet cabling and attach the ends with patch panels and Ethernet jacks where necessary.

Flood threat at troubled La. canal lock eases

A Louisiana official says crews are working to relieve pressure on a lock in danger of failing and flooding homes near a canal in St. Tammany Parish. NBC's Gabe Gutierrez reports.

By NBC News staff and news services

Updated at 12:01 p.m. ET: Engineers on Sunday were assessing the integrity of a lock along a canal north of New Orleans that threatened to fail and send water from the Hurricane Isaac-swollen Pearl River flooding through neighborhoods.

A flash-flood warning was in effect for east-central St. Tammany Parish, a community north of New Orleans in southeast Louisiana but officials said the threat of disaster had eased.

Parish President Pat Brister on Sunday changed the evacuation of the area between Bush and Hickory, east of Highway 41, ?from mandatory to voluntary. ?

"The Army Corps of Engineers Vicksburg District has lowered the pressure on Lock 2 near Bush.?The Corps informed President Brister this morning that the threat level is lowered significantly," St. Tammany Parish officials said in a statement on their website.

Sean Gardner / Reuters

St. Tammany Sheriff Jack Strain Jr., left, walks over Lock 2 of the Pearl River Navigational Canal in Bush, La., on Saturday. Officials opened a valve on the lock to relieve pressure on the overflowing Pearl River Navigational Canal.

"As there is still a potential threat, even though reduced, a voluntary evacuation remains in place until the Army Corps of Engineers deems the Lock stable and safe."

Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority

Aerial view of threatened Louisiana lock

Saturday night,?parish emergency officials said that the opening of valves had relieved pressure on Lock 2 on the Pearl River Diversion Canal but an evacuation order would remain in place.

Water began pouring over the lock and leaching around its sides Saturday, prompting fears the entire structure could be washed away, sending a wall of water into nearby neighborhoods.?

Officials had said earlier Saturday that the failure of the lock appeared imminent. That promoted the mandatory evacuation of thousands of residents in some 1,200 homes.

Parish Sheriff Jack Strain Strain and?Brister late Saturday said the threat of the lock failing had been lessened after crews managed to open valves to release some of the water and reduce pressure on the structure.

"The lock has been stabilized somewhat,? Strain said, according to nola.com.

St.Tammany officials inspect Lock 2 on Saturday.

"The worst-case scenario -- we don't believe that's going to happen,'' he added.

The National Weather Service is projecting the Pearl River, at the town of Pearl River, to crest early Monday morning at 19.5 feet.?

As residents in Louisiana, Mississippi and Arkansas? began surveying the damage to their homes, remnants of Isaac pushed their way north, spinning off tornadoes in southeast Missouri and threatening flash-flooding in parts of Tennessee and Kentucky.

The Gulf Coast is struggling to recover from Hurricane Isaac as nearly 400,000 homes and businesses are without power. NBC's Gabe Gutierrez reports.

In Missouri's Bootheel region, Dunklin County sheriff's deputies tracked a tornado that destroyed a farm shop and damaged a home's roof, The Associated Press reported.

On Sunday morning nearly 265,000 customers in Louisiana, 13,000 in Mississippi and 7,300 in Arkansas remained without power, according to The Weather Channel.

Isaac was the first hurricane to strike the United States this year and it hit the New Orleans area almost exactly seven years after Hurricane Katrina devastated the city, causing an estimated 1,800 deaths.?
