96% First Position

An outstanding film, pivotal in addressing the magnetism of the classical world of ballet, is "The Red Shoes" made in 1948 and starring Moira Shearer and Anton Walbrook; why pursue an art form that cripples, deforms, eliminates childhood, loves; rewards: fleeting, ephemeral?Bess Kargman's "First Position" answers the question as she delves into the the lives and psyches of seven children struggling to compete in the Youth America Grand Prix; five thousand world wide participants, pared down to three hundred; eventually only a handful will garnish trophies and scholarships. Seven disparate children, ranging in age from ten to seventeen are the focus of this insightful, sensitive documentary. Despite their differences, they all possess Olympian dedication, drive, vision to excel; pushing, punishing, demanding from their bodies grotesquely unimaginable feats; defying nature, gravity, commanding their souls to soar, fly with the butterflies, kiss the wind, touch and achieve, even surpass their whimsical, wildest aspirations. Those who have flirted with the definitive realm of ballet will recognize the torturous hours of practice, mangled toes, deformed arches, pneumatic ankles; falls, stumbles, that murder years of study; fervor, commitment, wills of iron propel them to dismiss the pain and forge forward."First Position" examines the families of the gifted, and the inimitable sacrifices they sustain to support their prodigies: "Joan Sebastian" rises from the poverty of Columbia; a visit home is one of the most compelling moments in the film; "Miko" of Asian-American descent, her passion and love of ballet is fed, nurtured by an overly -supportive, driven mother; "Michaela" an orphan from devastated Sierra Leone is given a chance to thrive by her adoptive parents, hers is a contemporary fairy tale; "Aran" divinely endowed, whose military family goes to monumental lengths to cater to their virtuoso son. Unlike "Black Swan" "First Position" shuns the dark side of this mystical, magical profession; eating disorders, unhealthy rivalries , ruined lives. Instead, Kargman perspicaciously probes the hunger, ambition, tenacity, maturity lurking beneath the surface of these young, aspiring devotees of ballet.Concluding, with a passage from "The Red Shoes", a conversation between "Vicky" the ballerina, and impresario "Lermontov" : Lermontov: "Why do you want to dance?" Vicky: "Why do you want to live?" Lermontov: "Well I don't know exactly, but....I must." Vicky: "That is my answer too.""First Position" touches upon, clarifies the illusive, messianic power that sabotages and monopolizes those individuals who live only to dance and dance only to live!FOUR STARS!!!!For Now.....Peneflix

Mysterious structure found on ancient lake

Archaeologists have unearthed the foundation of what appears to have been a massive, ancient structure, possibly a bridge leading to an artificial island, in what is now southeast Wales. The strange ruin, its discoverers say, is unlike anything found before in the United Kingdom and possibly all of Europe.

"It's a real mystery," said Steve Clarke, chairman and founding member of the Monmouth Archaeological Society, who discovered the structural remains earlier this month in Monmouth, Wales ? a town known for its rich archaeological features. "Whatever it is, there's nothing else like it. It may well be unique."

Clarke and his team discovered the remnants of three giant timber beams placed alongside one another on a floodplain at the edge of an ancient lake that has long since filled with silt. After being set into the ground, the pieces of timber decayed, leaving anaerobic (oxygen-free) clay, which formed after silt filled in the timbers' empty slots, Clarke told LiveScience. [ Photos of the mysterious structure ]

The team initially thought the timber structures were once sleeper beams, or shafts of timber placed in the ground to form the foundations of a house. However, the pieces appear to be too large for that purpose. While a typical sleeper beam would span about 1 foot (30 centimeters) across, these timber beams were over 3 feet wide and at least 50 feet long (or about 1 meter by 15 meters). The archaeologists are still digging and don't yet know how much longer the timbers are. Clarke says the structure's builders appear to have placed whole trees, cut in half lengthwise, into the ground.

"One other thing that is striking, that might be relevant, is that the timbers seem to be lined up with the middle of the lake," Clarke noted, suggesting that the structures may have been part of a causeway to a crannog, or artificial island, constructed in the middle of the lake. "Even so, if it is a path to a crannog, it's huge."

The archaeologists also aren't sure when it was built or even if it came before or after the lake formed, but they say the structure, at its oldest, could date to the Bronze Age around 4,000 years ago. Beneath the beams the researchers found a burnt mound of rock and charcoal fragments, alongside of which they discovered a hearth and trough ? scientists believe people in the Bronze Age heated stones in a fire and threw them into a filled trough to boil water.

"The discovery of this unusual site on a housing development near Monmouth is very interesting," a spokesperson for CADW, the Welsh government?s historic environment service, told LiveScience. "We have been monitoring the situation closely. At this point the date and function of the structure represented by these three long trenches is not known, despite a great deal of speculation. Only further excavation can clarify exactly what they represent." [ 7 Mysterious Archaeology Finds ]

Clarke believes its more likely the structure was built a little later, possibly during the Iron Age, but he says determining a reliable age for the structure will be tricky. Dating the burnt mound, which predates the timber that was placed on top of it, will only give a maximum age for the structure. Dating the clay, on the other hand, will yield an age that is too young because the clay deposited after the timber rotted away.

The archaeologists have already sent off charcoal samples from the burnt mound for chemical analyses and expect results later this month.

"And we now have some charcoal from the bottom of the slots (not from the burnt-mound area)," Clarke said. "Hopefully that will give us a closer date."

The research has yet to be published in a peer-reviewed scientific journal, with work at the site currently in progress.

Negative radiation pressure in light could make some tractor beams real, we're already sucked in

Developing a real, working tractor beam has regularly been an exercise in frustration: it often relies on brute force attempts to induce a magnetic link or an air pressure gap, either of which falls a bit short of science fiction-level elegance. The Technion-Israel Institute of Technology's Mordechai Segev has a theory that would use the subtler (though not entirely movie-like) concept of negative radiation pressure in light to move objects. By using materials that have a negative refraction index, where the light photons and their overall wave shape move in opposite directions, Segev wants to create a sweet spot where negative radiation pressure exists and an object caught in the middle can be pushed around. His early approach would use extremely thin crystals stacked in layers to manipulate the refraction. As it's theorized, the technology won't be pulling in the Millennium Falcon anytime soon -- the millimeters-wide layer intervals dictate the size of what can be pulled. Nonetheless, even the surgery-level tractor beams that Segev hopes will ultimately stem from upcoming tests would bring us much closer to the future that we've always wanted.

There's little good humor in ice cream shortage

Courtesy of Good Humor

By Eve Tahmincioglu

There?s nothing like enjoying a Chocolate Eclair from a Good Humor truck on a hot summer day; munching on the cake coating and vanilla ice cream in order to get to the fudge center.

You know you want one now.

Alas, it may be a while before your local Good Humor man, or woman, will be selling the creamy treat.

The Eclair, along with two other Good Humor classics -- Toasted Almond, Candy-Center Crunch ? are victims of a shortage and you may not be able to get the products until later this summer.

?Primarily due to the unprecedented warm spring weather, as well as the routine challenges presented when production moves from one plant to others, some iconic Good Humor brands are in shorter supply via mobile vending units,? said Caroline Krajewski, a spokeswoman for Unilever, the parent Dutch company that produces the products.

The company announced last year it was shuttering its Hagerstown, MD, ice cream plant by 2013, and would be laying off about 400 employees. The plant produced the classics that are now in short supply, but Krajewski wouldn?t comment on whether the company was rethinking its decision.

One of the first Good Humor trucks

For all you ice cream lovers upset about the shortage, don?t panic yet. Turns out the three ice cream products are still available at your local grocery story.

But there?s just something nostalgic about getting a cool treat from those Good Humor trucks, which first hit the road equipped with freezers in 1920. Their creator, Harry Burt, used his son?s bobsled bells on one of the first models.

What?s your favorite ice cream truck ice cream treat??

Blog Tour - Interview with Devin D. Thorpe

Devin D. Thorpe, author of Building Wealth for Building the Kingdom: A Financial Planning Guide for Latter-day Saint Families, lives in China and teaches business at a local University on behalf of Brigham Young University.? Previously, Devin?s 25 year career in business included seven years running an investment banking firm as well as other corporate finance positions.? He served an LDS Mission in Argentina.? He earned an MBA from Cornell University after earning a BS in Finance from the University of Utah.? More information is available at Devin?s blog: bw4bk.tumblr.com; follow @devinthorpe on Twitter; like Building Wealth for Building the Kingdom on Facebook. Building Wealth for Building the Kingdom is a simple, practical guide to help LDS families organize their personal financial plans to meet their unique goals. The book provides simple answers to questions like:
  • How much should I be saving each month for my son's mission?
  • How much should I be saving each month for my children's college education?
  • How can I save enough to be able to retire while I'm healthy enough to serve a mission?
Avoiding tips on pinching pennies, the book focuses on opportunities to save thousands or tens of thousands of dollars by making smart moves with big decisions, like home and car purchases. Mormon families will appreciate the gospel-centered, scripture-based focus on putting tithing at the center of a financial plan. Building Wealth for Building the Kingdom will help prepare families to enjoy the benefits of their labor while simultaneously contributing to the growth of Church. This book has been written for those Latter-day Saints (members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) who believe that it is more important to do good than to do well. ?That is to say, it is written for you because you believe it is more important to raise a good family, attend to your Church duties, send your children on missions and pay tithing than it is for you to accumulate wealth.? You may, therefore, lack adequate financial planning.? The objective of this book is to help you to prepare financially to render any service that you may be called to give. Brigham Young best expressed what has become the theme for this book.? He said, ?If, by industrious habits and honorable dealings, you obtain thousands or millions, little or much, it is your duty to use all that is put in your possession, as judiciously as you have knowledge, to build up the Kingdom of God on the earth.? What Brigham Young suggests is something akin to consecration.? The Church does not now require that we currently share all of our wealth directly with the Church or that we keep all things in common.? Instead, we live a preparatory law of tithing and the payment of offerings.? Beyond that, we give to the Church much of our free time.?? We save and invest our money to prepare our children to enter life as contributing members of the Church.? We save and invest to send our children on missions and to serve missions ourselves. This preparatory law is good preparation for living the higher law.? So much of our time, talents and resources are already dedicated directly to building the kingdom that to go to the next step of fully consecrating our assets and income to the Lord should become relatively simple.? It is not inappropriate to consider financial planning from the standpoint of preparing ourselves for living this higher law. Self-reliance is a fundamental precept of our Latter-day religion.? President Hinckley explained this concept in an interview with the BBC in 1995, saying: We teach emphatically the importance of self-reliance, the importance of education, of equipping our people so they can earn a living; the importance of saving and being prudent in the management of their affairs; the importance of setting something aside, a re-serve, to take care of their needs if there should come a rainy day in their lives. And it's amazing how many follow that teaching. That's basic with us. This desire for self-reliance, therefore, further defines who we are as Latter-day Saints and how we approach the task of financial planning.? Our objective, therefore, is to be able to provide for ourselves and our family members all of the things we desire them to have?without reliance upon a government dole or help from the Church.? Although you may never have thought about it before, your perspective on financial planning is likely somewhat different than other people?s.? The motivations you may have as a Latter-day Saint in accumulating wealth are likely associated with a desire to render service to others, to build up the Lord?s Kingdom, to prepare yourself to live the law of consecration and, finally, a desire to be self-reliant. Q:? What motivated you to write the book? My work on the book began 15 years ago, early in my business and financial career, because even with an MBA from Cornell University, I recognized that I had to research the answers to many of the questions that the book answers.? If MBAs working in finance needed these tips, I figured many people would. Q:? What is the single most useful thing you have learned and how has it helped you as a writer? Everyone has a desire to matter, to make a difference, to be significant.? Most of us lack the courage to do the hard things that matter, that make a difference and that allow us to become significant.? Find the courage to do the hard things that matter, that make a difference in the world and you will become significant. Q:? What would you say are your main literary influences? As much as I love to write?and I do love to write?I love to read more.? I make an effort to read a variety of genres and authors, from classics to contemporary fiction, and all kinds of non-fiction.? I guess everyone has his or her own approach, but I recently read a blog from an author who said she?d been working on her book for seven years and hadn?t read a single page of anyone else?s book in that time.? I?m absolutely certain I?m not good enough to write well without reading inspiring prose. Q:? What are the biggest challenges you have faced with self-publishing? The great thing about self-publishing in 2012 is how easy it is.? With just a bit of work, you can publish a book with absolutely no cost on Amazon?s Kindle publishing platform.? A few bucks with help from people I found at odesk.com got the book into even better shape, including a version for publication on the Create Space, which makes a print version of my book available immediately on virtually every on-line bookstore, including some international ones.? It is a great day to be an author?I feel sorry for publishers! Q:? What surprised you about the self-publishing process? Right now there is a stigma attached to self-published authors, that just because you can pay for the book to be published doesn?t mean you are a qualified author. Do you think self-publishing will ever become a respected industry? ? If the recent bankruptcy of Houghon-Mifflin doesn?t convince you that the publishing world has now completely changed, let me point out that Mark Cuban recently self-published his book, opting to avoid the artificial constraints, limitations and unfair division of profits inherent in the current publishing model.? Mark Cuban could have had almost any publisher he wanted.? Other well-known and well-respected people who have written great books have opted to self-publish their books.? In other words, I think we?re there.? The tables have turned and people are starting to ask, ?Why did you need a publisher to help you get your book out when you could have done it all by yourself??? The truth is, publishers have never sold books?authors always did and now we don?t have to share the profits! Q:? What is your advice to authors who decide to self-publish? Don?t ever apologize for self-publishing your work.? Ever.

A visceral photograph of a living human brain has been announced as the overall winner in this year's Wellcome Image Awards.

Taken by Robert Ludlow of UCL's Institute of Neurology during a surgical procedure to treat a patient with epilepsy, the image depicts the beauty and fragility of this enigmatic organ.

Professor Alice Roberts, who was a member of the judging panel, said: "This is a remarkable image of a human brain. What makes it so different from most images of the surface of the brain is that this organ is living - this is a brain as it is encountered during neurosurgery. Through the skill of the photographer, we have the privilege of seeing something which is normally hidden away inside our skulls. The arteries are bright scarlet with oxygenated blood, the veins deep purple, and the 'grey matter' of the brain a flushed, delicate pink. It is quite extraordinary."

The Award was presented at a ceremony at Wellcome Collection in London last night. Sixteen Wellcome Image Awards were presented in total and this marks the first time that an overall winner has been selected.

Catherine Draycott, Head of Wellcome Images and a member of the judging panel, said: "The Wellcome Image Awards are unique in that the winners are chosen for their scientific and technical merit as much as for their aesthetic appeal. They offer people a chance to get closer to science and research and see it in a different way, as a source of beauty as well as providing important information about ourselves and the world around us."

Medical photography is a notoriously difficult practice, with photographers having to work around clinicians to take the crucial images with no control over lighting or conditions. But the images are essential for helping doctors to make diagnoses, to track and record treatments and for education purposes.

Other Wellcome Image Award winners include a vibrant, false-colour magnification of a caffeine crystal and a hair-raising close-up of a moth fly. The Awards will be on display at Wellcome Collection until December 2012.

Pentax K-30 weather-sealed DSLR hands-on with sample photos and video

Pentax K30 weathersealed DSLR handson with sample photos and video

We can count on one hand the number of times a waterproof camera was the only suitable option for any given photo shoot, but drizzle and even flash monsoons can strike at any moment, especially in some locales. Most clothing and other analog gear can survive such attacks of mother nature nearly unscathed, but smartphones and cameras are another story altogether -- unless they're coated in head-to-toe weather sealing, of course. Pentax may not be a top player in any digital imaging category, but the company does have a few serious DSLR contenders, and should be taken seriously for anyone in the market for a new ILC. The manufacturer's latest swappable-lens model, the K-30, is quite a respectable beast, and a fairly solid value at $900 with an 18-55mm kit lens. Beneath that steel and polycarbonate black housing there's a 16.3-megapixel APS-C sensor with shift-based stabilization, a 100-percent FOV optical viewfinder, a color-adjustable 921k-dot 3-inch LCD and a bevy of manual control options, for stills and video alike.

We put the K-30 through its paces during a half-day shoot around NYC. There was no rain, sand or snow in sight, but the brutal heat and humidity didn't take any toll, with the camera offering consistent performance and excellent battery life for hours on end (we captured nearly 700 stills with live view and a few minutes of video with plenty to spare, and you can also swap in four AA lithiums for up to 1600 shots). We spend much of our time shooting with mirrorless cameras these days, but when absolute portability is less critical, there are obvious benefits to lugging around a full-size DSLR like the K-30. The camera was able to shoot with perfect exposure and white balance in almost every situation and images captured with the 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 kit lens were sharp and vibrant. Video performance was sufficient as well -- most of our clips were captured at 720/30p, but 720/60p and 1080/30p are also on offer. Focus wasn't the fastest we've seen (the Olympus E-M5 still holds the title), but the lens adjusted accurately even in low light, especially when aided by the green illuminator.

High-ISO performance didn't blow us away with noise reduction deactivated -- noise was visible at a 25-percent view at ISO 12,800 and a 12.5-percent view at the ISO 25,600 extended setting, but the sensor-shift stabilization mode enabled us to capture sharp handheld shots at 1/40 second, so it's not terribly difficult to avoid venturing into that high-sensitivity zone. Pentax also added a unique Astrotracer mode, which moves the sensor precisely for long night-sky exposures, using an optional GPS module to provide location and direction information (there was no way to test this feature in NYC, where the city lights never sleep). We did have a chance to test out that weather sealing, however -- the camera functioned just as well while under a running water fountain as it did on dry land. Overall, we were quite impressed with the K-30 -- it's one of the best sub-$1,000 DSLRs we've used to date, and if you've made an investment in Pentax KAF2 glass (or you're ready to load up now), you can expect to be pleased. Click past the break for a sample gallery and video.

Belkin's new 80211ac wireless routers feed nextgen networking needsBroadcom rolled out its new wireless Gigabit 802.11ac chips in January of this year, and since then Buffalo, Netgear and ASUS have all delivered routers packing the speedy new new tech. Well, Belkin's finally joining the party with its new AC1000 and AC1200 dual-band routers sporting 802.11ac/b/g/n wireless and four Gigabit Ethernet ports. Courtesy of the ac chip inside, the $140 AC1000 delivers a max throughput of 665Mbps on the 5GHz band, while the AC1200 ups that speed to 867Mbps and will set you back $160. Once they go on sale at the end of June, you just gotta grab an appropriate ASUS laptop or find a phone packing Marvell's latest WiFi silicon and you'll actually be able to take advantage of that massive throughput -- assuming your broadband connection cooperates, of course.

Syria fighter pilot defects in new blow to Assad

A Syrian airforce colonel won political asylum after landing his MiG fighter in Jordan Thursday, as a watchdog reported the deadliest day of fighting in Syria since the battered April ceasefire.

The dramatic defection of the airforce pilot, who reportedly flew his jet under the radar to safely get over the border, was the first from inside one of the most privileged arms of the security forces.

It came as human rights monitors reported that at least 168 had died in Thursday's clashes inside Syria, in one of the bloodiest days since the uprising began in March 2011.

"The council of ministers has decided to grant the pilot, Colonel Hassan Merei al-Hamade, political asylum," Jordanian Information Minister Samih Maaytah told AFP.

Earlier, a government official had said the Russian MiG-21 made an emergency landing at a base in Mafraq near the border.

Syrian state television said the plane was near the border when contact was lost at 0734 GMT. Jordan said it crossed the frontier minutes later.

The opposition Syrian National Council said: "The plane took off at high speed and flew at low altitude from a military base between Daraa and Sweida in the south of the country... to avoid detection by radar."

"The pilot is from Deir Ezzor (in eastern Syria) and his family is known for its opposition" to Assad's regime, spokesman George Sabra added.

The Syrian defence ministry denounced Hamade.

"The pilot is considered a deserter and a traitor to his country, and to his military honour, and he will be sanctioned under military rules," said a ministry statement carried by state television.

"Relevant contacts have been made with the authorities in Jordan in order to recover the jet on which the traitor pilot made his getaway."

Washington welcomed the defection.

"This is how these things start," said State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said.

"It is obviously a significant moment when a guy takes a $25 million plane and flies it to another country."

Tens of thousands of soldiers have defected since the revolt against Assad's rule erupted in March last year, with thousands joining the rebel Free Syrian Army, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The air force had previously been seen as a loyal arm of the regime, however. Assad's father Hafez headed the service before seizing power in 1970, and air force intelligence remains one of the most feared branches of the security services.

Diplomats, meanwhile, stepped up efforts to stem the bloodshed, with Arab states demanding that Russia stop arming Syria. The United States and Britain were reportedly working on a transition plan.

"Any assistance to violence must be ceased because when you supply military equipment, you help kill people. This must stop," Arab League deputy chief Ahmed Ben Hilli told the Interfax news agency.

He also called for the mandate of UN and Arab League envoy Kofi Annan to be revamped, and for Iran's inclusion in talks on ending the conflict.

UN chief Ban Ki-moon discussed Syria with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Thursday on the sidelines of a conference in Rio de Janeiro, a spokesman said.

Both London and Washington meanwhile denied a reports in British newspaper The Guardian that they were working on an initiative for regime change based on Annan's UN-backed plan that calls for a "Syrian-led political transition."

Reports said Britain and the United States have discussed offering Assad immunity from prosecution if he steps down as part of a political transition.

But Britain's Foreign Office said "no new offer" was on the table and at the State Department, Nuland also said there was "no truth" to the story.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, whose government retains close ties with Damascus, said any peace plan that calls for Assad to leave power and go into exile would not work because he would not quit.

"I do not think Assad will be sitting down at the negotiating table," said Lavrov, pointing to the results of a widely criticised May 7 parliamentary election which he said showed a majority still backed the Syrian leader.

In the latest bloodshed, nearly 170 people, mainly civilians, were killed, the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

"It's the bloodiest day since the start of the ceasefire (on April 12) and one of the bloodiest since the start of the revolt against the Syrian regime," Observatory director Rami Abdel Rahman told AFP.

Among the hardest hit was the central region of Homs, where 31 civilians and a rebel fighter died, the Observatory told AFP.

The bombardment halted attempts by the International Committee of the Red Cross and the Syrian Red Crescent to evacuate trapped civilians, but the agencies vowed to try again on Friday.

Hundreds of people are believed to be trapped in the historic heart of Syria's third-largest city, unable to flee or find shelter because of the fighting, the Geneva-based agency said.

More than 15,000 people have been killed since the revolt against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's regime began in March 2011, according to the Observatory.

Nintendo to start selling 3DS with larger screens

In this image released by Nintendo Co., Japanese game maker Nintendo's 3DS LL, left, and 3DS are shown. Nintendo has upgraded its 3DS handheld to sport a screen nearly twice as big as the previous model amid hot competition against smartphones and tablets that are wooing people away from dedicated gaming machines. The Kyoto-based maker of the Super Mario games and Wii home console said Friday, June 22, 2012, the Nintendo 3DS LL, called 3DS XL in overseas markets, goes on sale in Japan and Europe July 28, and in the U.S. from Aug. 19. It will sell in Japan for 18,900 yen ($236) and $199.99 in the U.S. It did not give a price for Europe. (AP Photo/Nintendo Co.) EDITORIAL USE ONLY

TOKYO (AP) ? Japanese game maker Nintendo Co. has upgraded its 3DS handheld to sport a screen nearly twice as big as the previous model amid hot competition against smartphones and tablets that are wooing people away from dedicated gaming machines.

The Kyoto-based maker of the Super Mario games and Wii home console said Friday the Nintendo 3DS LL, called 3DS XL in overseas markets, goes on sale in Japan and Europe July 28, and in the U.S. from Aug. 19.

It will sell in Japan for 18,900 yen ($236) and $199.99 in the U.S. It did not give a price for Europe.

The 3DS, which has a touch panel and delivers 3-D imagery without special glasses, has two screens ? one is 3.53 inches and the other is 3.02 inches.

The LL or XL version's screens are 4.88 inches and 4.18 inches, according to the company. Screen inches refer to the diagonal measurement so LL screens are 1.9 times bigger.

"There were demands for a bigger screen, and so we are ready to respond with a size-variation model," Nintendo President Satoru Iwata said in a video on the company's website. "You can enjoy powerful 3D imagery."

It weighs a bit more and is slightly bigger than the previous model. But battery life was extended to up to six and a half hours for 3D games from the previous five hours, and up to 10 hours from eight hours for regular games.

Yusuke Tsunoda, analyst at Tokai Tokyo Securities Co., said bigger screens are generally almost always a plus for game machines sales, and the affordable price adds to the appeal.

"People who already have the 3DS and those who don't may but it. After all, it's so cheap," he said.

Nintendo and Japanese rival Sony Corp. with its PlayStation Vita handheld are fighting tough competition from smartphones and tablets, which allow users to not only play games but also spend time on social media and other entertainment.

The bigger screens may help differentiate Nintendo's handheld from other devices, but the upgraded screen is still smaller than the iPad.

Iwata has repeatedly shrugged off the threat from smartphones.

"Nintendo doesn't want to compete in a sector other than where it feels its strength lies," said Tsunoda.

Nintendo has sold 17 million 3DS machines worldwide so far. Sony has sold 1.8 million of its PS Vita machines.

Nintendo is also planning a new home console called Wii U for later this year. It will have a 6.2-inch touchscreen controller that works separately from what's on the TV monitor. But it won't work as a portable like the 3DS or 3DS LL.

Sometimes kids have a hard time expressing what's on their minds, but when the evidence is dangling right under their noses, words aren't really necessary.

Nevertheless, this adorable boy turns to the camera to state the obvious after a simple sneeze produces some rather unexpected results.

"Boogers. I have boogers," the youngster says as he turns his attention from his cereal. He calmly places the spoon back into the bowl and patiently waits for some assistance. Tissue, please!

Don't worry, buddy. It happens. Somebody give this cutie an award for keeping his composure.

Axl face-plants during GNR show, plus other falls

By Anna Chan

Oh Axl Rose. You're clearly not the spry, energetic young rock star you once were at the height of Guns N' Roses' fame. When the latest version of the band performed at Hellfest in France on Saturday, Axl fell face first onto a platform on stage during "Sweet Child o' Mine."

Keep your eyes on the right side of the stage:

Sure, the veteran performer recovered quickly, but perhaps he wasn't feeling so hot on this tour. A full video of the Saturday gig on YouTube revealed a totally uninspired performance of "Sweet Child" by the GNR frontman. (The clip was later yanked, but here's a performance of a similar energy level from Axl on April 6 in the Netherlands.) That fall would've been totally excusable had he been channeling a?smidgen?of the energy he once had on stage. But instead of running, jumping and dancing around vigorously as he once did, the frontman strolled slowly back and forth during the performance of one of the band's biggest hits. No wonder the crowd seemed to lack energy as well. (No dancing at a rock show? No moshing? What is this world coming to?!?)

And no, Axl's certainly not the first (nor will he be the last) performer to fall. Check out these others:

How to Pronounce Uranus Without Laughing [Video]

Uranus. Your anus. You're in us. As hard as you might try, it's almost impossible to avoid smirking when you hear the name of the seventh planet. This video, by GCP Grey, takes a look at the history of its name, how it could have had a monicker that made fewer children laugh and—most importantly—how to go about pronouncing it on those rare occasions when you simply have to refer to it directly.
