Higher mercury levels in humans associated with ... - Health.am

? Diabetes ? ? Food & Nutrition ? Apr 07, 2013

A new study found that higher levels of mercury exposure in young adults increased their risks for type 2 diabetes later in life by 65 percent. The study, led by Indiana University School of Public Health-Bloomington epidemiologist Ka He, is the first to establish the link between mercury and diabetes in humans.

The study paints a complicated nutritional picture because the main source of mercury in humans comes from the consumption of fish and shellfish, nearly all of which contain traces of mercury. Fish and shellfish also contain lean protein and other nutrients, such as magnesium and omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, that make them important to a healthy diet.

In the study, published online early in the journal Diabetes Care, the people with the highest levels of mercury also appeared to have healthier lifestyles - lower body mass indexes and smaller waist circumferences, more exercise - than other study participants. They also ate more fish, which is a possible marker of healthy diet or higher social economic status. Risk factors for type 2 diabetes include being overweight.

The study, which involved 3,875 men and women, established the link between mercury levels and type 2 diabetes risk after controlling for lifestyle and other dietary factors such as magnesium and omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, which could counter the effects of the mercury.?

These findings, said He, point to the importance of selecting fish known to have low levels of mercury, such as shrimp, salmon and catfish, and avoiding fish with higher levels, such as swordfish and shark. FDA and EPA guidelines for fish consumption highlight this, particularly for women who are pregnant or of childbearing age and for young children.

?It is likely that the overall health impact of fish consumption may reflect the interactions of nutrients and contaminants in fish. Thus, studying any of these nutrients and contaminants such as mercury should consider confounding from other components in fish,? He and the authors wrote in the study. ?In the current study, the association between mercury exposure and diabetes incidence was substantially strengthened after controlling for intake of LCn-3PUFAs (omega-3) and magnesium.?

The study participants were recruited from Birmingham, Ala., Oakland, Calif., Chicago and Minneapolis, and then followed for 18 years as part of the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults Study. He, chair of the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics in the IU School of Public Health-Bloomington, is principal investigator of the ancillary study, the CARDIA Trace Element Study, which is funded by the National Institutes of Health.

Golf Clinic Gives Back to Military Kids

April is Military Child Month, and Saturday a local golf course said thanks to families serving the country.

Wilderness Ridge hosted its 4th annual golf clinic for military kids.

Almost 50 kids signed up. Organizers say that's the most ever.

The kids got to work with golf pros, learning more about the game and having some fun.

Military parents say it's a chance for their kids to meet others like them and feel a sense of community.

Organizers say it's a way for the golf course to give back to the community and say thanks to our soldiers and their families.

They say it's important to recognize parents aren't the only ones who serve - their kids do too.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Secretary of State John Kerry is headed to the Middle East on his third trip there in just two weeks in a fresh bid to unlock long-stalled Israeli-Palestinian peace talks.

Kerry departs Saturday for Istanbul, the first leg of a six-nation trip that will see him travel on to Europe and East Asia. From there, he heads to Jerusalem for meetings with the presidents and prime ministers of both Israel and the Palestinians ? after accompanying President Barack Obama there last month and making a solo trip to the Jewish state shortly after.

Though expectations are low for any breakthrough on Kerry's trip, his diplomacy represents some of the Obama administration's most sustained efforts for ending more than six decades of conflict between Israelis and Palestinians. Kerry is likely to seek confidence-building measures between the two sides, with negotiators and observers seeing little chance right now for immediate progress on the big stumbling blocks toward a two-state peace agreement.

He may have more success on his first stop persuading Turkish leaders to continue improving ties with Israel. The two countries were once allies, but relations spiraled downward after Israel's 2010 raid on a Turkish flotilla bound for the Gaza Strip. Eight Turks and one Turkish-American died.

Hopes for rapprochement improved after Obama brokered a telephone conversation between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Turkey's Prime Minister, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, while the American president was in Israel.

In Turkey, Kerry also will coordinate with Erdogan and other Turkish officials on efforts to halt the violence in neighboring Syria's civil war.

Kerry will also visit Britain and then South Korea, China and Japan, where talks will focus on North Korea's nuclear program and escalating threats against the U.S. and its allies.

He is scheduled to return to Washington on April 15.

Tips On Overcoming Your Dental Phobia | GoodArticle.net

April 1, 2013 author Health & Fitness

Most people experience fear in going to a dental checkup. You would know you are among these people if you would rather endure the pain of your toothache and stick to your known routines just to alleviate the pain or better yet divert your attention just to ignore the throbbing pain of your tooth. Everything in the dentist?s room, from the sound of its drill to the white tray, all would feel like instruments of putting you into bad shape. The secret to conquering it is going to a dentist that is skilled and experienced who can handle everything gently and smoothly.

The key to finally conquering your fear is to choose the best dentist in the area. You?ll want to choose a dentist who is not only highly skilled with modern dental procedures and new technologies, but also someone who is highly proficient at making patients feel well at ease. Use these top four ways of choosing your ideal dentist and finally defeating your fears.

1. Go and visit the dental clinics you?ve shortlisted and spend time talking with the staff and the dentist. Do this before you make any appointments. The initial visit will help you get a sense of how the staff and the dentist interact with patients. This would also be an excellent time to come clean about your fears and find out how the dentist will go about addressing them during your procedures. By going on this ?tour,? you basically establish trust and determine the dentist?s chairside manner.

2. When you finally make that first appointment with the dentist, take it slow. Your initial procedure should be an easy one to handle, like teeth cleaning. If your fear is as overwhelming as most people?s, talk with your dentist before the simple procedure. Establish a signal that will tell him or her that you feel the need to take a breather. The ideal dentist will ask you during your cleaning if you feel any pain at all and perform the procedure according to your level of comfort.

3. Use the sedation procedures offered by your dentist. Dental procedures have improved by leaps and bounds, thanks in large part to the development of new technologies and better sedation techniques. Your dentist may recommend nitrous oxide or anti-anxiety medication. Of course, never take medication without your dentist?s approval because you never know what side effects might occur.

4. Consider relaxation techniques before you go in for complex procedures like dental implants or other services like the Invisalign Coral Gables orthodontists offer. You can try breathing exercises, do yoga, or listen to music that calms your nerves. The best way to get rid of nerves before your visit is to schedule your appointment in the morning. This way you avoid having to work up an anxiety during the day.

To help you overcome your dental phobia, find out through this site.

Geckos keep firm grip in wet natural habitat

Tuesday, April 2, 2013

Geckos' ability to stick to trees and leaves during rainforest downpours has fascinated scientists for decades, leading a group of University of Akron researchers to solve the mystery.

They discovered that wet, hydrophobic (water-repellent) surfaces like those of leaves and tree trunks secure a gecko's grip similar to the way dry surfaces do. The finding brings UA integrated bioscience doctoral candidate Alyssa Stark and her research colleagues closer to developing a synthetic adhesive that sticks when wet.

Principal investigator Stark and her fellow UA researchers Ila Badge, Nicholas Wucinich, Timothy Sullivan, Peter Niewiarowski and Ali Dhinojwala study the adhesive qualities of gecko pads, which have tiny, clingy hairs that stick like Velcro to dry surfaces. In a 2012 study, the team discovered that geckos lose their grip on wet glass. This finding led the scientists to explore how the lizards function in their natural environments.

The scientists studied the clinging power of six geckos, which they outfitted with harnesses and tugged upon gently as the lizards clung to surfaces in wet and dry conditions. The researchers found that the effect of water on adhesive strength correlates with wettability, or the ability of a liquid to maintain contact with a solid surface. On glass, which has high wettability, a film of water forms between the surface and the gecko's foot, decreasing adhesion. Conversely, on surfaces with low wettability, such as waxy leaves on tropical plants, the areas in contact with the gecko's toes remain dry and adhesion, firm.

"The geckos stuck just as well under water as they did on a dry surface, as long as the surface was hydrophobic," Stark explains. "We believe this is how geckos stick to wet leaves and tree trunks in their natural environment."

The discovery, "Surface Wettability Plays a Significant Role in Gecko Adhesion Underwater," was published April 1, 2013 by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The study has implications for the design of a synthetic gecko-inspired adhesive.

Caroline Kennedy to Be Named Ambassador to Japan

gty caroline kennedy thg 130401 wblog Caroline Kennedy to Be Named Ambassador to Japan

Caroline Kennedy is expected to be nominated U.S. ambassador to Japan, but the nomination is not yet finalized, a knowledgeable source told ABC News Monday.

Kennedy, the only living child of President John F. Kennedy, is a lawyer and author of 10 books, including a text on the Bill of Rights and a collection of her mother's favorite poems.

In the past election cycle, Kennedy campaigned for President Obama at several events in swing state New Hampshire. She contributed to the Obama campaign narrative that Mitt Romney would have been the wrong candidate for women.

She endorsed Obama back in January 2008 in an op-ed that compared him to her father. During the 2008 election, she led the effort to pick Vice President Joe Biden.

She was strongly considered to be next in line to take Hillary Clinton's Senate seat in New York when she withdrew to serve as secretary of state in January 2009, but at the last minute, Kennedy took herself out of consideration for that position, because of a "very private family matter." A book about the life of her uncle, Ted Kennedy, suggests her children might have been the reason she opted out.

The 55-year-old Kennedy daughter is largely considered one of the more private members of the politically prestigious family.

Kennedy has recently served as the president of the Kennedy Presidential Library and an adviser to the Harvard Institute of Politics.

John Roos has served as U.S. ambassador to Japan since August 2009. He was the first in that role to attend the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Ceremony, remembering the horrors suffered after the dropping of the atomic bomb. Other ambassadors to Japan have included John "Tom" Schieffer, brother of "Face of the Nation" anchor Bob Schieffer, and former White House Chief of Staff Howard H. Baker.
