When Religion is Deadly - Randy Gage

iStock_000023926802XSmall

Sorry to have been absent for a few days, but I?ve been reflecting on this post, and wanted to make sure I could write it without emotional distractions, and bring up some of the serious issues we face.? The events of the recent Boston Marathon bombings drive home yet again how harmful and dangerous religious beliefs can be.? This applies both to those that hold them, and unfortunately ? also and especially to those who don?t.

And because those beliefs are created by mind viruses ? highly charged with emotion and often indoctrinated at a young age ? most of the people with these dangerous beliefs have no clue of the danger they pose to themselves and others.? And have no idea that they are not acting rationally.

Some commenters on the earlier posts on this subject have chastised me for being judgmental or as dogmatic as the brainwashed religious cult members I am warning against.? But this criticism does not stand the test of reason.

The goal of those posts was not to attack or ridicule people?s beliefs or their right to hold them, but to point out the lack of rational thought it takes to believe such things.? They also serve to illuminate the subliminal programming which many of them have that leads to low self-esteem, worthiness issues and self-sabotage ? and in extreme cases physical attacks or murder of others? (as the Boston events just demonstrated).?? These beliefs are anti-humanity and thus, anti-prosperity.

The Greeks thought Artemis was the virgin goddess of the hunt, although she later was promoted to the moon goddess.? The Romans had a counterpart in Diana.? Likewise the Greeks had Poseidon as the god of the seas, and the Romans worshiped Neptune for all things maritime.? ?When it comes to the supreme, supreme deities, the Greeks went with Zeus, while the Romans genuflected to his counterpart Jupiter.

As people became wiser and science helped unfold some of the mysteries of the universe, these beliefs faded away, becoming the grist of folklore, superstition and metaphors for superhero movie plots.?? (Although don?t think for a minute that there are still not people who believe in them.? There are.)

For most people today, however, we look back on these myths, thinking they are quaint, and wondering how people could hold such illogical, irrational and outlandish beliefs.? ?Yet if we look at the beliefs held by at least four or five billion of the world?s population today, they are just as bizarre and no less implausible.

You may think that these are just harmless personal beliefs, and if they console people and help them process traumatic events like the death of a loved one, or a bad medical diagnosis, they serve a beneficial purpose to society.? But now we have to seriously question that assumption.

Because religion is killing people.? Again.

Unreason, which is a polite way to say craziness, is running rampant in the world today.? The fact that such a large percentage of the world?s population still believe in Sky-God superstitions ? and these people are air traffic controllers, engineers, and even presidents and Prime Ministers ? is certainly cause for trepidation.? ?Even worse, none of them think there is anything irrational and absurd about the certainty they have in their superstitions.

Shit and Stuff?

The really ironic dynamic in all this is that everyone thinks their own beliefs are historical facts, and everyone else?s beliefs are crazy delusions.? It reminds me of George Carlin?s brilliant bit on stuff and shit.? If it?s yours, it?s stuff.? If it belongs to someone else, then it?s shit.? As in, ?Who left this shit here?? This is where I keep my stuff.?

So we have Mormons who think their magic underwear protects them from evil, Christians who trust Noah brought dinosaurs on the ark, Hindus who believe Indra was born fully grown from his mother?s side, Scientologists who imagine they are extraterrestrials from a previous lifetime and Jewish Rabbis who fly on airplanes sealed in a hefty bag because they?re flying over a cemetery.? Certainly no rational person not indoctrinated at birth or infected with mind viruses would exhibit any of these thought processes.

Probably you defend the rights of people to practice their faith and believe any of these things, as I do.? ?Just as these people have no real proof their deities actually exist, I have no proof that they don?t.?? Most of these beliefs are quaint superstitions like Zeus, Poseidon and Neptune, and if they make people feel better, good for them.

The issue arises when the beliefs that these people are brainwashed with cause misery and suffering for them, and prevent them from reaching the prosperity and happiness that is their birthright. ?Or worse yet, cause them to attack and kill others.

Most of your core foundational beliefs about all the important things:? relationships, health, happiness, prosperity, religion, sex, etc. ? are set before you are ten years old.? ?Sadly, only one person in 20 or 30 million actually does any critical thinking on this when they grow up.?? To live an enlightened life, you must be willing to analyze the beliefs you live by.

You have to ask:

  • What are my core beliefs on these subjects?
  • How did I come to get them?
  • Are they actually true?

These are questions most people simply don?t ask.? They operate their whole lives on the programming they received with they were six, seven or eight years old.? And if that programming teaches you that you are a sorry sinner, are not worthy, are meant to suffer in this lifetime, won?t reach enlightenment until another 44 lifetimes, or you?re reincarnated this lifetime to pay penance for a past lifetime ? you?re pretty much screwed.

Unless you question your beliefs with a rational mind, and eviscerate the ones that are not serving you.?

Otherwise, you will grow into adulthood with low self-esteem and worthiness issues, which prevents you from being happy and leads to a lifetime of fear.? ?This can lead to self-sabotage behavior in your health, relationships and career.? In extreme cases it can lead to suicide, as when young gay teens take their life because they?ve been programmed to think there is something wrong with them.

For the most part, the beliefs of these individual sects and cults only impact the cult members themselves.? But there is an even greater danger today, and that is when religious zealots attack and kill people outside of their faith.

And that is where Islam comes into the picture.?

The Qur?an is very specific in its instruction for believers regarding non-believers:? Non-believers are infidels who must be converted or killed.? And Muslims who read and believe the Qur?an is the verbatim word of Allah are not only dangerous to themselves, but society as a whole.

It apparently was those beliefs that led Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev to detonate the explosives that would kill and maim dozens of innocent spectators at a sporting event.? ?Like the 9/11 attacks, the victims were of many faiths, even Muslim.? How can you quantify the mind viruses that cause people to blow up an 8-year-old boy, cause his 7-year old sister to lose her leg, and even injure believers of your own faith, and believe you are conducting a holy war?

Muslims who take the Qur?an literally believe that by committing such cowardly and heinous acts, they will receive 72 virgin maidens in paradise as a reward.? ?And this is where Islam jumps the shark?

Some dismissed my earlier posts as ?Islamophobia,? (a charge I see being leveled against Sam Harris recently as well).? That accusation does not pass the logic test.? Islamophobia would suggest an irrational fear of Islam.

But the events of the last 15 years have demonstrated that non-believers have many very rational reasons to fear Islam??

Islam certainly isn?t the only religious cult to operate on folklore, myths and superstitions. I think most if not all do.? And Islam is not alone being based upon premises no rational person could believe if they were not infected with memes.?? What makes Islam the most dangerous religion in the world today is its teachings on martyrdom, jihad, and killing non-believers.

To be fair, the way Islam discriminates and ostracizes women, non-heterosexuals and non-believers is not unique.? Mormons banish non-heterosexuals, the Bible says they should be stoned, and the Torah prescribes the death penalty for homosexuality. ?But truth is, you won?t find a lot of Mormon deacons, Jewish rabbis, or Catholic ministers actually preaching to kill homosexuals today.?? But in the Islamic world, homosexuality equals a death sentence, and there are many Imams preaching this.

The way the Muslim world treats women is simply unconscionable and barbaric.?? Even ?Game of Thrones? wouldn?t fantasize something as preposterous as killing girls simply because they wanted to get an education.?? It wouldn?t pass for a credible plot in an epic fantasy like ?Thrones?, but this is the actual reality in many Muslim countries today.

And it doesn?t stop with the non-heterosexuals and women?

Many Muslim clerics advocate attacking or even killing anyone who ridicules their religion.? These ?spiritual leaders? issue death fatwas on authors and incite riots in response to comics.? And there is a strong and growing faction in the Islamic world committed to a jihad to convert or kill all ?infidels.?? The Boston bombings and the plot to derail a Canadian passenger train are just the most recent examples of attempted mass murder done in the name of Islam.

Islam is certainly not the only religion to kill people in the name of God.? There are many examples throughout history, notably the Catholic church during the Inquisition.? And while this was as vengeful and barbaric as the fundamentalist Muslims are today, there?s a very big difference in the potential impact:? While the Inquisition was at its peak of violent extremism, there were no tools of worldwide manipulation like the Internet and satellite TV.? Nor did weapons of mass destruction exist.

This all leads us to three very important issues, in terms of prosperity:

First, be mindful of what beliefs you?ve been indoctrinated with, and then being able to rationally analyze them.?? Do they pass the rationality test of someone who isn?t infected with memes?? Do those beliefs serve you or enslave you?

Second, recognize that ?religious tolerance? and respecting the beliefs of people who want to kill you doesn?t end well.? A central tenet of prosperity is knowing your own value, setting boundaries, and protecting your interests.

Finally, we need to really think about the role organized religion plays in the world today.? Instead of leading to self-awakening and enlightenment, it seems to be leading people to be satisfied with not knowing answers, instead of searching for them.

Fundamentalism now often serves as a code word for hate and intolerance.? When religions become catalysts for killing, it?s time for some serious re-evaluation.

-RG

P.S.? Based on some of the questions and comments below, let me add some additional thoughts.? I have read the Qur?an.? I have spent time in Dubai, Malaysia, and Indonesia numerous times and found the people there to be delightful.? I was always treated gracious and welcoming, and am happy to have many Muslim friends from those countries, Egypt, and here in the U.S.

I think some of the Muslim beliefs are preposterous, but no more so than many of the beliefs held by devout Jews, Christians, Hindus and many other religions.? Personally I find the Qur?an to be filled with savagery and barbarism, but we can certainly say that about other sacred texts, including the Bible.

The difference is you don?t see religious leaders in those other faiths directing their followers to continue the iron and stone age savagery, but many Muslim clerics and heads of state still do.? ?The other issue is when Muslims practice such behaviors, people suggest that they are extremists who don?t follow the Qur?an, when in actually, they are devout Muslims who are following the Qur?an quite literally.? Lets at least be honest and acknowledge the real nature of this sacred text.

I?m not on a crusade to rid the world of Islam, or any other religion.? (Although the question of whether the world would be better off without them is a fair one at this point in time.)? The purpose of this post is to point out the danger that arises when people blindly follow dogma and doctrines without practicing critical thinking.?? Everything goes back to the three questions I pose above, and whether you have the courage and rationality to ask and answer them.

Must we accommodate a bike courier who can no longer ride a bike ...

Q. We run a courier service delivering time-sensitive documents around the Twin Cities by bicycle. Recently, an employee broke her leg while skiing. Now she is unable to perform her job as bicycle courier. Do we have to put her in a different job while her leg is in a cast?

A. Although your employee is impaired in her ability to deliver documents by bicycle, she is not likely to be disabled under the ADA. To qualify as a disability, an impairment must be more than a minor or transitory impairment (i.e., lasting more than six months). Here, your employee is not likely to be disabled if her broken leg will heal in less than six months.

Because she is not disabled, you do not need to accommodate her injury. Even if you were obligated to provide reasonable accommodations, disregarding the essential functions of her job and putting her in a new job is not likely to be considered a reasonable accommodation that you would be obligated to provide.

Although she may not have protections under disability discrimination laws, if you are an FMLA employer and she is a qualified employee, she may be entitled to up 12 weeks of leave from work to recover from her injury. If she is able to return to her job after her FMLA leave entitlement expires, you would be obligated to reinstate her to her previous position following the leave.

Samsung Galaxy Mega hits FCC (again), this time with LTE

Samsung Galaxy Mega hits FCC again, this time with LTE

Better start working on those powerball exercises. At least if Samsung's Galaxy Mega was the thing you thought your life was missing, as it's just landed at the FCC. Yeah, we know this isn't the first time, but on second time around it's the LTE-sporting GT-i9205 model. The usual lab tests show little that we didn't know already -- unless you didn't know it had LTE Band 5, dual band WiFi, NFC or GSM 850 / 1900. As the 5.8-inch isn't 4G-enabled, this means we're looking at the bigger 6.3-inch version, but still no word on if, when or how a version might land on US shores. Still no harm in limbering up though, is there?

Update: Upon further inspection, this variant only uses LTE band 5 (850mhz), which no us carrier currently uses. It's very unlikely this I9205 will hit the US.

Apple's cash plan takes heat off Cook, buys him time

By Poornima Gupta and Ben Berkowitz

(Reuters) - Tim Cook wants investors to "think different" about Apple: less as a hyper-growth startup-like company and more as a mature but robust technology corporation with the world's biggest dividend.

If Wall Street follows Apple Inc's famous advertising slogan of old, it may relieve some of the pressure on Apple's chief executive, quiet investors' grumbling about its recent share price slide, and buy the company time to do what it says it does best: come up with and market new products.

On Tuesday, Apple said it would return $100 billion to shareholders by the end of 2015, in part by raising its dividend 15 percent and in part by increasing its share buyback program six-fold to $60 billion.

To some extent, the expanded capital return program helped mask its first quarterly profit decline in a decade, though analysts say the more important issue now is what Apple has in store on the gadget front.

Apple shares were up 0.2 percent to $406.96 in afternoon trading on Wednesday, reversing direction after falling about 1 percent in early trading. The stock has seen a 43 percent slide since mid-September.

With Apple planning to borrow money to reward shareholders - one way to circumvent repatriating its vast overseas cash for that purpose - it could go from having zero debt to a company that rivals major global banks such as Citigroup in issuing bonds.

The company received an AA+ rating from Standard & Poor's, missing the top rating due to earnings growth uncertainty.

Following the earnings, at least 17 brokerages lowered their price targets on the stock, including JPMorgan, which cut its target by 25 percent.

Apple's earnings growth trajectory has come to earth in the last year. After posting average annual earnings per share growth of 62 percent over the past five years, its profit is now forecast to grow at just 4.5 percent a year for the next decade. For this year, earnings per share are expected to fall 4.4 percent, according to Thomson Reuters StarMine data.

ADMITTING A CHANGE

Cook is trying to reset heightened expectations around a company once universally feted for its ability to captivate both consumers and Wall Street.

In the years following the introduction of the iPhone in 2007 and the iPad in 2010, the company established a pattern of consistently blowing past even the most bullish Wall Street earnings expectations, much to everyone's delight.

But on Tuesday, Cook made the rare admission to analysts on a conference call that Apple's growth has slowed and margins have decreased.

Apple is a mature company that's now trying to get everyone to see it as one, analysts say.

"They are modulating into a state where the highs are not as high and lows are not so low," Forrester analyst Sarah Rotman Epps said.

Apple shares moved 5 percent higher Tuesday on the back of the capital program, though the gains evaporated later.

Any gains would have come as little consolation to investors who have watched Apple shed more than $280 billion in market value in the last few months as investors adjusted to a new, slower-growth reality.

Roger Kay, president of researcher and consultant Endpoint Technologies Associates said the expanded share repurchase and dividend scheme would keep investors satisfied for a while.

In the longer term, Apple needs another blockbuster gadget to accelerate its momentum and win investors back for the longer term. Cook tried on Tuesday to drum up enthusiasm around the product pipeline by teasing that "some really great stuff," potentially in new product categories, was coming in the fall and in 2014.

"They need something that breaks into new verticals, whether it's TV or something that's wearable, that opens up a new revenue stream," Epps said.

RESETTING THE SCALE

That remains among the most pertinent concerns for Apple-watchers. Since Cook took over in 2011 from late co-founder Steve Jobs, some investors have questioned whether Apple can continue to up-end technology markets with new revolutionary products that appeal to consumers in the absence of the tech icon.

Cook has in the past year presided over three straight quarters of missed revenue expectations before the January-to-March period. The key product introduced during his tenure is the smaller iPad mini, a response to tablets such as Amazon.com Inc's Kindle that were making inroads on its home turf.

The public takes as a given that a new iPhone and new iPads will come this year, along with refreshed Mac computers and iPod music players. But the speculation is that Apple is also working on a watch, a television and a radio service, among other products in the pipeline.

Cook would not provide any more details on new products, no surprise given the company's penchant for secrecy.

Some investors remain confident the Apple magic remains.

"The bar has been reset in terms of expectations and guidance. They have done the right thing by issuing debt and doing a large buyback," said Jason Jones, who runs tech hedge fund firm HighStep Capital and confessed to being an Apple bull.

"The company will go through this quiet period for product release and then, starting in the summer and for the remainder of the year, product announcements will pick up and likely the stock will react favorably to that."

While Apple is still growing - no small achievement for a company with sales well over $100 billion - its pace of growth has slowed as high-end smartphone adoption approaches saturation and rivals flood the market with cheaper devices, which are popular in high-growth developing countries like China and India.

Cook on Tuesday acknowledged that Samsung, which has smartphones in all price categories, is its top competitor. Apple also said it does sacrifice margin in the short-term, as it did with the iPad mini, if executives believe a product has long-term potential.

"Apple is in the transition phase from growth to a value company," said Tim Ghriskey, chief investment officer of Solaris Asset Management. "Growth companies tend to put every penny back in, but that is not the case with Apple here."

This article is about Ash's main and temporary traveling companions. If you were looking for a general list of people Ash has met on his journey, see Character of the day.

Ash's friends are the traveling companions that Ash Ketchum has had with him on his journey on his quest to become a Pokmon Master. While he started his journey alone, many people have joined his party while touring the Pokmon world; usually at least one new companion joinsand another leavesevery time a new region is visited.

Johto is the only region where Ash did not acquire a new friend that would travel with him, excluding Brock, who came back after his absence, and Todd Snap and Ritchie, who both traveled with him temporarily.

Misty joined Ash in Pokmon Emergency!, traveling with him because she wanted him to replace her bike, which was destroyed by his Pikachu. She would continuously travel with him until Gotta Catch Ya Later!, when she returned to Cerulean City nearly full-time to lead her family's Gym, though she briefly traveled to Hoenn and met up with Ash's Advanced Generation group, and again to "escort" her back home.

Brock first joined Ash in Showdown in Pewter City after Ash battled him in the Pewter City Gym. After his father Flint offered to take over the duties of Gym Leader, Brock followed Ash through Kanto, leaving briefly from Pok Ball Peril to A Tent Situation to work for Professor Ivy. After this episode, Brock returned to be with Ash and Misty until Gotta Catch Ya Later!, though he, unlike Misty, would return shortly, in You Can Never Taillow, sticking with Ash until the end of the series. He would again return in Two Degrees of Separation!, and so traveled through Sinnoh with Ash until Memories are Made of Bliss!.

After Brock left to work for Professor Ivy, Ash's traveling group was down to two, as it had been for the first five episodes of Kanto. However, this would not last very long, as in The Lost Lapras, Tracey essentially invited himself along for the rest of the Orange Islands saga. Traveling with Ash, he wished to attain his ultimate goal of meeting Professor Oak, which he did when Ash returned to Kanto in A Tents Situation. After this, he remained in Pallet Town to be Professor Oak's assistant.

Ash may have traveled to Hoenn alone; however, shortly after his arrival, he met May, a young girl who desired to travel around the world and a fellow Trainer who was just starting her journey, and then ended up destroying her bike just like that of Misty. Though she initially did not care for Pokmon battles, she eventually found Pokmon Contests, in which she competed while in Hoenn and then later in Kanto. Internet Games May traveled with Ash through the entire Advanced Generation saga, from Get the Show on the Road to Home is Where the Start Is!, after which she went off to Johto to compete in Contests there. She, like Misty, reappeared briefly during the Diamond & Pearl series to compete in the Wallace Cup.

Max is May's younger brother. He does not have any Pokmon of his own because he is too young, but he often befriends certain Pokmon. He traveled with the group from There's no Place Like Hoenn until Home is Where the Start Is, when he went home to Petalburg City. However, he made a promise to Ash that as soon as he got his own Pokmon, he would battle Ash.

Like his journey into Hoenn, Ash ventured to Sinnoh alone, where, in When Pokmon Worlds Collide!, he would meet Dawn. From that point, after saving Ash's Pikachu and having her bike fried in a similar way to May's and Misty's, Dawn would travel with Ash and Brock through Sinnoh, which she did until Memories are Made of Bliss! when all three friends split up.

Dawn rejoins Ash's group in the Best Wishes series in Piplup, Pansage, and a Meeting of the Times! to compete in the Pokmon World Tournament Junior Cup. Dawn would leave the group in Goodbye, pokemon Junior Cup - Hello Adventure! and travel to Johto to compete in the Wallace Cup.

Iris is said to be a wild girl, as proven by the fact that she swings on vines. She decided to travel throughout Unova with fake pokemon Deelk Ash.

Cilan, a Pokmon Connoisseur and one of the Gym Leaders of the Striaton City Gym, travels hot to get play with fake pokemon Canion with Ash and Iris in their journey through Unova.

Todd Snap accompanied Ash, Misty, and Brock from Pokmon Paparazzi to The Breeding Center Secret. He later meets up with Ash again in Moving Pictures during his journey through Johto, trying to take a photograph of the legendary Articuno. They meet an elderly couple celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary, and Todd has the honor of taking their anniversary photo for them. Later on, in Freeze Frame Todd finally finds Articuno and manages to get a photograph of it. He then departs from the group once more.

Ritchie accompanied Ash, Misty, and Brock from The Mystery is History to A Promise is a Promise while he was searching for a mysterious Pokmon that can be found in the Whirl Islands, which turned out to be a Lugia.

Professor Birch accompanied Ash, Brock, May, and Max as they traveled through the forests of Dewford.

Cheryl accompanied Ash, Brock, and Dawn through the Eterna Forest.

Barry accompanied Ash, Brock, and Dawn how to catch monstermmorpg monster Chesane while Ash was trying to earn the Relic Badge.

Lyra met Ash, Dawn, and Brock during the Johto Festival in An Egg Scramble!. She Bmx Games and Khoury accompanied them to Lilypad Town and left the group in Bagged then Tagged! when she returned to Johto.

Khoury met Ash, Dawn, and Brock during the Johto Festival when Lyra introduced them in An Egg Scramble!. He and Lyra accompanied them to Lilypad Town and left the group in Bagged then Tagged! when he returned to Johto.

Bianca first met Ash in Minccino Neat And Tidy where she gave him his Badge case from Professor Juniper. She later accompanies him, Iris, and Cilan for a short time on their way to Nimbasa City. However, upon hearing that Ash had 3 Badges, she was inspired to catch up to him, and left to collect Badges on her own. Since then, Bianca has temporarily joined the group numerous times during their journey.

Luke first met Ash, Iris, and Cilan in his hometown where they helped him produce a movie. He later accompanies them to Nimbasa Town where he stays with them during the Club Battle tournament before heading back home at the end of The Club Battle Finale: A Heroes Outcome!.

After reportedly being disbanded from Team Rocket, Meowth was found unconscious by Ash's Tepig and Iris's Axew. The group nursed him back to health and invited him to accompany them so as to protect him from Trainers wanting to capture the only talking Meowth in Unova. He used his ability to speak to humans and Pokmon many times during their travels together.

He later revealed their travels to be a facade to gain their trust for a mission, and reunited with Jessie and James in Crisis from the Underground Up!.

Stephen decided to travel with Ash and co. in Climbing the Tower of Success! after taking part in a competition with them. He left the group after winning the Clubsplosion tournament.

After Dawn left the group after the Junior Tournament, Cameron decided to join Ash, Iris, and Cilan. He left the group after he won his eighth and final Badge against Marlon.

After meeting with Ash and the others again in BW114, he began traveling with them. After an encounter with Team Plasma, N was forced to leave the group.

Knot Island (Japanese: Bond Island) is the first island in the Sevii Islands archipelago. It is the most northwest of all the islands.

Knot Island is an isolated little place, and most of the younger people living on the island are eager to leave for big cities.

Knot Island is home to the Pokmon Net Center, run by Celio. The Net Center is located in the town of One Island, on the south side of the island. The Pokmon Net Center has a large, long-distance trading machine that enables Trainers to trade Pokmon with others in the Hoenn and Orre regions.

A small area extends to an island south of the town, called Treasure Beach, where valuable items, such as Big Pearls and Stardust, wash up and regenerate.

There is an enormous volcano, Mt. Ember, at the very north tip of the island, and it is reachable via a path known as Kindle Road, which is popular for its hot springs. The hot springs on Kindle Road can restore energy and vitality to Pokmon.

Mt. Ember makes the island a popular tourist spot Mario Games thanks to the hot springs and climate. Luckily, Mt. Ember has not erupted in hot to get play with fake pokemon Ceravel years.

Although believed to be inactive, the tunnels beneath the volcano are still warm with geothermic energy that attracts Fire-type Pokmon. Additionally, the presence of a legendary Pokmon on Mt. Ember keeps the peak ablaze with flames at night.

Mt. Ember and Knot Island Pokemon Iv Calculatorwhere to catch monster Coeath are home to Moltres in Pokmon FireRed and LeafGreen.

Celio only completes the Net Center after the main character in Pokmon FireRed or LeafGreen brings him both the Sapphire and the Ruby, found on Chrono Island and atop Mt. Ember, respectively.

Knot Island was seen in The Search play with fake pokemon Fuzoo for the Legend, where Ritchie took a ferry to Knot Island to visit Mt. Ember. Due to a dubbing error, it is referred to as Mt. Magma. Online 3d Games

Pokmon Dollar (Japanese: Pokdollar) is the main currency used in all known regions of the Pokmon world. Its symbol is , a P with a double strikethrough, similar to the symbol used for Japanese yen or the symbol used for euro, with the P symbol referring to Pokmon.

The Pokmon Dollar and its symbol were both created for the English translation of the games. In the original Japanese versions (except for Colosseum and XD), the currency used is yen and the symbol used is , the kanji for yen. As such, the Pokmon Dollar is based on yen.

Also, much like the yen, the cost of simple items runs in the hundredsindeed, most items have prices that are multiples of 100 Cartoon Network or 1000.

Pokmon Dollars are acquired primarily by defeating Pokmon Trainers in battle, or by selling items at a Pok Mart. Pokmon Dollars can also be acquired by using the move Pay Day in battle, at the rate of either 2 or 5 times the level of the Pokmon using it, depending on the generation. Pokmon Black and White introduce the concept of item maniacs. Item maniacs are NPCs who will pay large sums of money for certain items, most of which have no other use but to be sold to these people.

In the handheld Pokmon games before Pokmon Black and White, a player's wallet can hold only up to 999,999. This may cause frustration when trying to save up for the advertised price of a Bicycle in Generation I (and its Generation III remakes) or a SlowpokeTail on Route 32 in Generation II (and its Generation IV remakes), since both are advertised Killing Games for 1 more than the player can carry. The GameCube and Generation V games allow players to carry seven-digit figures of money.

Other names that fans have come up with for the monetary note over the years have been "Pok Dollars", "Credits", "PokMoney", "Pocket Money", "Zenny", "PokYen", "Pen" or "Pyen". Most fans simply refer to them as "dollars". However, according to Pokmon Colosseum and Pokmon XD, the official name for them is Pokmon Dollars.

Coins are utilized to play the various games Anteaf of the Game Corners throughout the Pokmon world, as well as to obtain and collect the various Game Corner prizes available.

Battle Points (introduced in Pokmon Emerald) are used as currency in numerous battling facilities, such fake pokemon game map Tyrannosaurus Forest as the Battle Frontiers of Hoenn and Sinnoh/Johto, as well as the Battle Subway and Pokmon World Tournament of Unova.

Mt. Battle and Poktopia use Pok Coupons as their currency; due to both of these locations being battle facilities, they are analogous to Battle Points. www.monstermmorpg.com/Pokemon-Special

The Pokmon Mystery Dungeon world used Pok as its sole form of currency up until Pokmon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity. In Pokmon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity, Gold Bars are used as a form of currency as well for purchasing items.

In the Dream World, PokPark Wii: Pikachu's Adventure and PokPark 2: Wonders Beyond, Berries are used as a form of currency instead.

In Pokmon Conquest, gold is used as the currency to pay for items, ponigiri, and various other services.

Pokmon Dollars are not used or seen in the Pokmon anime, whether the original or the English dub, although money has been mentioned throughout the anime and the yen Pokemon Snap Rom symbol (changed to a dollar symbol in the dub) appears on a restaurant bill in Showdown in Pewter City.

CSN: A's slam Red Sox 13-0 in rain-shortened outing

BOX SCORE

It took frigid weather to heat up the Oakland Athletics' cold bats. The A's offense erupted for 13 runs over seven innings in a rain-shortened win over the Red Sox in Boston. The 13-0 victory snapped the A's four-game losing streak, and was their biggest shutout win at Fenway Park since an 11-0 win on August 30, 1930.

At the Plate

The A's got the big inning they've desperately needed lately. It happened in the third inning, when the Red Sox had a team-wide meltdown as the A's batted around. Alfredo Aceves walked three A's hitters and gave up a single to start the inning. With the bases loaded and no outs, Seth Smith drew a walk to give the A's a 1-0 lead.

After Jed Lowrie stuck out on three pitches, Brandon Moss picked him up with a two-run single to make it 3-0. Aceves balked Smith to third base, then Josh Donaldson followed with a hard-hit sacrifice fly to center field to make it 4-0.

The Red Sox defense melted down on the next play. Josh Reddick hit the ball sharply and Mike Napoli made a diving stop, Reddick beat Aceves to first base for the infield single. During the Red Sox confusion, Moss rounded third and scored as Aceves made a bad throw home that got past the catcher, which allowed Reddick to reach second.

Aceves balked again, which moved Reddick to third base. Chris Young then reached on an error that allowed Reddick to score and make it 6-0. Sogard, the 10th batter, grounded out to end the inning.

In the next inning, Seth Smith crushed a two-run home run to center field to make it 8-0 A's. It was Smith's second homer of the season.

Down 8-0 in the fifth inning, it looked like the Red Sox strategy was to continuously put A's runners on base until the rain fell hard enough to postpone the game. The rain didn't get worse at that point, but the A's poured it on.

Donaldson led off with a single, Young and Sogard walked, and Coco Crisp hit a two-run double to make it 10-0. John Jaso drove in two more runs to make it an even dozen for the A's.

Reddick made it 13-0 with an RBI double. He finished the day 2 for 4 with two RBI. He's driven in runs in three consecutive games.

Every A's hitter in the starting lineup reached base.

Aceves allowed eight runs -- seven earned -- and reliever Steven Wright allowed five runs.

Starting Pitching Report

Bartolo Colon was masterful. Even with extended waits between trips to the mound, he stayed sharp and pounded the strike zone. The veteran pitcher allowed one hit through the first four innings with four strikeouts. He retired 12 batters in a row at one point.

Through three starts this season, Colon had yet to walk a batter. Since he didn't walk anyone in his final start of 2012, he had the longest such streak for an A's starting pitcher since 1916. Colon finally walked a batter in the sixth inning. He made it 24 innings in 2013 before he allowed a walk.

Colon got his third win of the season. He threw seven innings, allowed just three hits, and struck out seven batters. He struck out the side in his final inning of work.

Bullpen Report

No relievers were needed.

In the Field

It was wet, windy, and rainy, but the A's didn't misplay any balls.

Attendance

The Red Sox announced an attendance of 29,006.

Up Next

Brett Anderson takes the mound in the series finale. He sprained his right ankle in his previous start and only pitched one inning. The A's ace is off to a rough start this season. He is 1-3 with a 5.95 ERA. Anderson has been successful against the Red Sox in his career, with a 5-2 record and a 2.70 ERA in eight career starts against them.

The Red Sox will send left-handed pitcher Jon Lester to the mound. He is 3-0 with a 1.73 ERA this season.

Photographer's loss offers hope for Boston wounded

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) ? In the first horrific moments after the Boston bombing, with smoke still billowing around the wounded, I know what is going through the minds of the maimed victims.

They are at once conscious and unconscious. They want to scream, but they cannot scream. They want to wake up from a nightmare, but they are awake.

Overcome with a sense of deja vu, I feel my past converge with the future of those wounded spectators.

I lost my leg in a bomb blast. I know the violent shock of a day that begins well and ends with an amputation, the fog of drugs and surgery, the months of painful rehabilitation.

I know the suffering that lies ahead for these people in Boston. And I know the possibilities, too.

For those who lost a limb or more in the Boston Marathon, Monday, April 15, 2013, was the day their world changed forever.

Mine changed on Tuesday, Aug. 11, 2009. I had been embedded with the U.S. military for two weeks in southern Afghanistan as a photographer for The Associated Press, and this was to have been my last patrol before going home. It had been a long day in the open desert of Kandahar province and I was whipped, barely awake, in fact, when our eight-wheel armored Stryker vehicle hit a roadside bomb and flipped over, knocking me unconscious.

When I came to, I tried to get up but couldn't; my left foot was hanging by a few tendons. I felt brutal pain, like an electric shock, that began in my leg and swept through the rest of my body. Lying inside the vehicle, I thought of my wife, and willed myself to stay alive.

Eventually, a soldier found me and tied on a tourniquet.

In my years as a photojournalist, I'd taken many pictures of wounded soldiers and victims of suicide bombers. I had covered medical evacuations from Afghanistan, Pakistan and the Palestinian territories, and found it odd to suddenly be among those pulled from an inferno and carried on a stretcher ? along with two other soldiers and AP Television News videographer Andi Jatmiko.

They loaded me onto a helicopter next to a soldier who had lost both of his legs and we locked hands as the chopper took off for the provincial capital of Kandahar. The solidarity in that moment is the last thing I remember before waking up in a hospital tent to find my left leg had been amputated below the knee. There was no option to save it, doctors told me. Bone and tissue were destroyed by shrapnel. But fortunately my knee was intact, and that would make a substantial difference in my future mobility, they explained.

That offered little comfort as I lay alone and exhausted in a hospital bed in Afghanistan. I had so many questions about life with just one leg but I preferred sleep to thinking about my uncertain future.

The difference between those who lost limbs in Boston and me is that I knew I was taking a risk in a war zone and assumed it willingly, while they had merely gone out to cheer friends and relatives at a family sporting event.

They weren't supposed to be in danger.

I was a photographer documenting soldiers at war and everyday life for civilians under fire. But before violence grabs you, does anyone really believe he will become one of the dead or wounded? No. Nothing had happened to me on dozens of previous patrols with the military through hostile lands. And while I suspected I was playing a kind of Russian roulette, I also told myself that car accidents happen every day and most people don't stop driving because of that.

For months after the explosion I was tortured by so many "what ifs." What if I had stayed back to pack rather than going on patrol that day? What if I had sat a little bit to the right, would the shrapnel have missed my leg? Or if I had sat to the left, would I have lost both legs like the soldier next to me?

I imagine those in Boston whose bodies were torn up by nails or the blasts have similar thoughts: Why didn't I stand at mile 25, go for water, leave earlier, stay home? I would like to tell them that these questions fade as one begins to accept the reality of losing a limb.

The morphine they gave me to dim the pain of my amputation sapped my energy. I wanted off it so I could start my recuperation with all my strength and walk as soon as possible. I am a Spanish citizen, not American, and was lucky that the AP was able to work bureaucratic miracles to get me admitted to the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, one of the world's best rehab hospitals.

In Afghanistan, I had visited a rehabilitation center run by the Red Cross in Kabul that was considered one of the best in the country. The hospital was one of the few that provided prostheses to patients, including children, who had been blown up by forgotten mines in rural areas.

It's nonsense to compare Walter Reed with the Red Cross center; it is like comparing day and night. However I never stop thinking about those Afghan patients and how they were facing their rehabilitation process even in that calamitous center.

I appreciated even more my luck in Walter Reed and I realized that fate is marked by where you are born.

I was 40 years old, agile and in good shape from exercise and work as a photographer in rough terrain. I even used to jog in the Afghan capital of Kabul when I lived there. So just a month after the explosion, I threw myself into rehab. Although my wounds were still fresh, I put on my first prosthesis and took my first steps. I was determined.

And I was completely unprepared for the difficulty.

It took tremendous strength to learn to walk again. I needed practice, but practice rubbed my wounds raw. Exercise was essential and exercise produced blisters where the prosthesis was joined to my leg ? more hot pain.

I was frustrated and felt useless on the days I couldn't exercise, waiting for the blisters to drain and heal. Then I would put the prosthesis back on and push myself to my limit until the skin broke again.

In those first days, I could only take a few steps. In the first weeks, it took me an hour to walk a mile. I worked out on a bicycle, on a treadmill and with weights. And month by month, I increased my speed so that finally I could walk the 2 1/2 miles from my rented home to the hospital in 25 minutes.

If those maimed in Boston were to ask me what was harder, the physical or psychological recovery, I would say the two go hand-in-hand.

At first I thought it was enough to recover physically, and that learning to walk and work again would naturally produce a psychological recovery.

I was wrong.

The strength of the wounded soldiers at Walter Reed helped me a great deal. Even though many of their injuries were so much worse than mine, I never heard them complain about pain or withdraw in self-pity.

I lost only the lower half of my left leg and came to understand that important distinction alongside soldiers who had lost a leg up to the hip, both legs, or legs and arms. We shared our daily experiences and hardships, often with humor. When a soldier who had lost both arms and legs teasingly called me "Paper Cut" for my lesser wounds, I called him "Trunk" and we laughed.

The soldiers, and some of my Spanish friends with amputations, also taught me the difference between losing a leg and missing a leg. The missing leg can be replaced with a prosthetic, but a loss is permanent. If you don't confront the feelings of loss ? the fact that your world has changed ? you never fully recover from the amputation.

The support of my family and friends was crucial. My relationship with my wife after the accident changed to a deeper love. I could see that the patients who didn't have as many visitors, as much love and reassurance around them, did not respond to physical therapy as quickly.

And then there was my camera.

The very instrument that had gotten me into this mess, if you will, became my inspiration and part of my salvation. I carried it with me all the time to photograph the recovery of my hospital mates and to test my own. It took a lot of practice to be able to look through the lens and maintain my balance while walking, as I had done before the amputation.

With a prosthetic, you have to watch for bumps and dips in your path because you have no feeling in your false foot. If you take a wrong step, it is easy to fall, and I fell many times before learning to compensate. Running is much harder, as the body struggles to adjust to a prosthetic leg. When I was 15, I ran a marathon. Now, I am running three miles once a week and I am exhausted. My goal is to run again and recapture the runner's high, the feeling of strength that I used to experience.

The new amputees in Boston will discover, as I did, that there is a whole world of prosthetics to choose from. Who would know if you didn't need one? There are feet made for running, walking, climbing, cycling, even for swimming and golfing. But it turns out there's no such thing as an all-terrain prosthesis, so in the end, I accumulated several.

I normally wear a versatile, durable foot, but I also carry a couple of extras in a backpack, one spare foot and a special one for running. I even have one for roller skating, which, after multiple clashes with trees, parked cars and the pavement, is now one of my favorite sports.

In the same way I have always tended to my cameras, I now must care for my prosthetics, making sure they are always in perfect working condition.

Like the amputees in Boston today, 3 ? years ago I joined a community to which no one wishes to belong. I have changed over the years, as they will.

For better or worse, I am more vulnerable now. If I were to offer advice, it would be that it's possible to accept help without feeling dependent. I would tell them what I tell myself, "Emilio, you're missing a foot so don't be too hard on yourself, and when someone offers you a seat on the bus, take it."

I would tell them the greatest truth I have learned is that I am a man who had a leg amputated, not an amputee.

I am still a whole person.

I have returned to work as a photojournalist with the AP. I have tried to become a better person, sharing my small successes with all the people who have helped me in critical times. I appreciate that I live in a nice house in Barcelona with my wife, who is pregnant. I am looking forward to becoming a father for the first time.

I know they cannot imagine this in Boston now, but I want them to know that while certainly I miss my leg, I feel very fortunate.

Chartboost Is Building The Next Gaming Platform To Watch, And ...

Five years ago from their native city of Barcelona, Maria Alegre used to watch old Stanford Technology Ventures Program videos from entrepreneurs sharing their founding stories. Intrigued by what she heard, she picked up and moved to the Valley, where Alegre dug into mobile gaming at early developer Tapulous, which went on to be acquired by Disney.

Fast forward to today, Alegre is running one of the fastest-growing game discovery platforms and mobile ad networks in Silicon Valley ? one that we?ve heard from three separate sources grossed about $50 million last year. (The company doesn?t comment on revenue figures). Her company Chartboost is quietly sucking in talent from an older generation of mobile ad networks and gaming studios like Google?s AdMob, DeNA?s Ngmoco and EA?s Popcap. They also picked up $19 million in funding led by storied VC firm Sequoia earlier this year.

?It?s kind of crazy. This all happened in four years,? she said. ?Anyone can do it. People running these companies are not super humans. They are just people like you and me.?

Today Chartboost is opening its first office abroad in Europe, led by Ilja Goossens, who founded Gamundo and Virtual Fairground. The new location in Amsterdam is meant to strengthen the company?s relationships with the biggest game developers across the continent. Europe is having something of a Renaissance in mobile gaming right now with players like Finland?s Supercell (which made $104 million in profit with just 100 people last quarter), Berlin?s Wooga and London?s King.

While other competing startups with mobile advertising products were less focused, Chartboost wedged itself into the gaming world where it built an early platform for developers to trade advertising inventory. Because games are the biggest category for apps in terms of time spent on iOS and Android, it was the ideal place to build a focused business. Chartboost earns revenue through excess inventory, which can be sold in an exchange.

Chartboost now has 16,000 games in its network and 8 billion ad impressions per month and has grown 30 percent since January. Instead of the old banner ads, which had poor clickthrough rates, Chartboost instead focused on creating interstitials that looked and felt like they belonged in a game.

At first, it wasn?t easy, however. Alegre said that when she and her co-founder Sean Fannan were starting out, they did 30 phone pitches to potential investors in a week. In late 2011, they picked up a small round from TransLink Capital, SK Telecom Ventures and XG Ventures.

But after the business starting gaining momentum, it was very different with the second round. Jim Goetz, the Sequoia partner who led the firm?s investment in earlier mobile advertising network AdMob, got Chartboost?s model right away and invested quickly in the company.

?We were more picky with who to talk to,? she said. ?The numbers don?t lie.?

Senators get deal on farm worker wages in immigration bill

By Richard Cowan and Charles Abbott

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Senators negotiating an immigration bill have reached agreement on wages for foreign farm laborers working in the United States and a limit on visas for such workers, Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein said on Thursday.

Feinstein, of California, refused to provide details on the agreement and added that there were some other issues related to farm workers still to be negotiated.

"We have an agreement on wages and the visa cap," Feinstein told Reuters. The deal followed a six-hour negotiating session on Wednesday, she said.

The farm worker portion of the bill is seen as the last major bit to be negotiated before Senate legislation is introduced in coming days.

The government estimates that of the 1.1 million workers in agriculture, at least half are undocumented.

An immigration bill, which will attempt a comprehensive update of U.S. policy for the first time since 1986, will try to end years of illegal hiring of foreign workers amid labor shortages in some sectors. It also will aim to put many of the estimated 11 million people living in the United States illegally - some for decades - on a path to citizenship.

Craig Regelbrugge, a member of an agricultural employer coalition, said "there are still important issues unresolved."

A key issue is the legal status for the tens of thousands of farm workers who entered the United States without documents.

The United Farm Workers union argues they should be given permanent resident status and the opportunity for citizenship. The Agriculture Workforce Coalition, representing employers, has suggested that legalization be tied to a commitment to work in agriculture for a specified number of months.

'NEVER MORE OPTIMISTIC'

Farm labor reform has two major parts - a decision on how to treat workers in the country illegally and revamping of the guest worker program. Employers want a new program to replace the H-2A program, which they say makes it difficult to recruit enough workers in a timely manner and sets wages too high. The union has warned against formulas that would depress wages.

The Senate Judiciary Committee has scheduled a hearing for Wednesday on the comprehensive immigration bill that a group of eight Democratic and Republican senators has been negotiating for months.

While Feinstein is not a member of that group, she has been a lead negotiator on the farm worker portion of the bill, which is very important to California, the nation's largest agricultural producing state.

Republican Senator John McCain of Arizona, a leading member of the group of eight senators negotiating the bill, told reporters that it was now "time to get it finished and introduced."

When asked when the bill would be unveiled, he said it would happen very soon.

Another Republican senator in the "gang of eight," Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, said he had "never felt more optimistic" about an immigration bill moving forward in the Senate.

But he said, "You always worry that something this complicated and emotional won't make it through."

Graham added, "The key is keeping business and labor (unions) together on the guest worker program" that aims to accommodate immigrant workers in agriculture and low-skilled construction workers, hotel maids and restaurant employees.

Carlson Receives Inaugural Award For ... - Franchising.com

April 11, 2013 // Franchising.com // Minneapolis - Carlson, a global hospitality and travel company, today announced that it is the first company to receive the Presidential Award for Extraordinary Efforts to Combat Trafficking in Persons. This prestigious recognition was presented at a ceremony at the White House.

Human trafficking is one of the world?s fastest growing crimes with an estimated $32 billion in revenue for the traffickers and an estimated 26 million people enslaved worldwide. Conservative estimates put the annual number of children sexually exploited at two million. In the United States alone, it is estimated that nearly 300,000 children are trafficked for sex annually.

In order to more effectively combat this issue, President Obama directed his cabinet to work more closely across departments to expand efforts and partnerships. The resulting interagency task force involving the State Department and the Departments of Justice, Labor, and Homeland Security is the first in the nation?s history to focus on the issue of human trafficking.

The Award for Extraordinary Efforts to Combat Trafficking in Persons is another component of President Obama?s commitment. Carlson received the award for its demonstrated commitment and corporate leadership in combating modern slavery through the adoption and promotion of business practices that seek to protect victims of human trafficking, and the development of proactive measures to train employees and encourage its partners and the broader business community to take a stand against human trafficking.

The company has been a leader and early supporter of efforts to recognize and prevent human and sex trafficking around the globe, and proactively trains its employees to be aware of the risks of sex trafficking, particularly of children.

?Carlson?s consistent and long-standing efforts to combat human trafficking have made our company a pioneer in this area, and while it is an honor to be recognized by the President for our efforts, the fight has just begun,? said Marilyn Carlson Nelson, former Chairman and CEO, Carlson, who was present at the ceremony. ?As Carlson continues to do its part, it is my fervent hope that our work will inspire others to join us in combating this crucial, global issue.?

Secretary of State John Kerry, chair of the President?s Task Force on Trafficking, said of the award, ?With this Presidential Award, we honor those who have played an extraordinary role in advancing our common cause. They have been pioneers in this effort?from developing the 3P approach of prevention, protection, and prosecution in the earliest days of this movement, to championing innovations in corporate social responsibility that will help carry this work forward for years to come. This award pays tribute to their leadership and their commitment.?

Tennessee high school student shot to death waiting for school bus

By NBC News staff

A Tennessee high school student was shot and killed Thursday waiting for the bus to school.

The victim was Johnathan Johnson, 17. His brother told NBC affiliate WSMV in Nashville that he was a good student and basketball player who loved the Boston Celtics.

Police told WSMV that they were seeking a suspect, Eric L. Goodner, also 17. Witnesses told the station that the suspect waited for Johnson on some steps leading to a vacant lot, then walked up to him at the bus stop and shot him.

Both were enrolled at Pearl-Cohn High School in Nashville, but Goodner has not attended since mid-February, WSMV reported. The principal, Sonia Stewart, said that Johnson was friendly and had a bright future.

Affleck reflects on Oscar speech

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Ben Affleck took home the best picture Oscar at this year's Academy Awards for his Iran hostage drama "Argo." But what everyone really remembers is that emotional, slightly uncomfortable acceptance speech. Everyone, apparently, except Affleck.

"I barely remember the Oscar speech," the actor-director said when asked about it at Tuesday's premiere of his latest film. "Certainly, the most important thing for me, in a way, was to honor my wife and to let people know how much I love her."

During his speech Affleck choked up while thanking his wife, Jennifer Garner, for working on their "marriage for 10 Christmases."

"I think you can tell what people care about really by their actions ? by what they invest in, by what they work on," he explained. "It's hard to tell somebody that you care about them when you're never around them and you don't see them and talk to them. So that was what I was trying to get across. Although I don't know how articulate I was."

Affleck was joined by co-stars Olga Kurylenko and Rachel McAdams for the Los Angeles premiere of Terrence Malick's romantic rumination "To the Wonder," which opens Friday.

Affleck, 40, admitted that seeing the celebrated director in action was indeed a wonder to behold.

"I think that you know he's a director who does really unusual stuff, really interesting stuff, and somebody who works outside the typical Hollywood norm. And that's interesting to other directors, certainly to me, because you go like 'wow, what would happen of you experiment with this?'"

The film stars Affleck as an American whose relationship with a woman he met overseas turns cold, leaving him drifting back toward a childhood love.

"To the Wonder" was the last review written by celebrated film critic Roger Ebert, who died Tuesday, and it sent "shivers" down Affleck's spine.

"I thought it was a profound honor," he said. "To have this be the last movie that he reviewed and to have it viewed through this sort of transcendental lens of a man at the end of his life is as important as anything that's ever happened around movies in my career."

Kobe Bryant Scores 47 Points As Lakers Top Blazers 113-106 To Move Closer To Playoff Berth (VIDEO)

PORTLAND, Ore. ? It didn't matter that it was the Rose Garden. The "M-V-P!" chant for Kobe Bryant was loud and clear.

Bryant scored a season-high 47 points and carried the Los Angeles Lakers closer to a playoff berth with a 113-106 victory over the short-handed but tenacious Portland Trail Blazers on Wednesday night.

The Lakers moved a full game up on the Utah Jazz for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

"We've got no breathing room at all," Bryant said. "I'm still on edge. We've got to win three more games and we're in."

Portland, missing the playoffs for the second straight season, has lost nine straight, the most since an 11-game skid in the 2005-06 season. Rookie Damian Lillard led the Blazers with a career-high 38 points.

Pau Gasol had 23 points, seven rebounds and nine assists, while Dwight Howard added 20 points and 10 rebounds for the Lakers. Bryant was 18 of 18 from the free throw line and played the entire game, determined to pull out a win after trailing early.

"What he (Bryant) is doing is phenomenal. He's determined to get us in the playoffs," Lakers coach Mike D'Antoni said. "That's what happens when you open your mouth and guarantee that we'll get in the playoffs."

Bryant vowed in late February that his team would make it to the postseason. The Lakers wrap up the regular season at home with games against playoff-bound Golden State, San Antonio and Houston.

Gasol knotted the game at 96 with a layup and a jumper with 7:09 left. After Lillard's 15-footer, Gasol added another jumper to tie it again. His layup gave the Lakers a 102-100 edge before Bryant hit a pair of free throws and added a 23-foot jump shot with 4:09 left to make it 106-100.

Howard's alley-oop dunk from Gasol with 53 seconds left made it 110-104 and all but sealed it.

For much of the game, it seemed like Bryant the veteran against Lillard the upstart rookie.

"He's spectacular ... really fantastic," Bryant said of the Blazers' five-time rookie of the month. "A lot of players get hot, but he's got the moves, patience, intelligence, the balance on his jumpers. He's the real deal."

Lillard has grown up admiring Bryant.

"I got to guard him and he got to guard me," Lillard said. "I enjoyed the challenge. `'

The deck was stacked from the start against the Blazers, who started four rookies for the first time in the team's history.

Portland was without starters Wesley Matthews (ankle), J.J. Hickson (back) and Nicolas Batum (right shoulder). As a result, two-time All-Star LaMarcus Aldridge was the only veteran starting with rookie forward Victor Claver, guards Lillard and Will Barton, and center Meyers Leonard.

Matthews injured his right ankle in Portland's 96-91 loss to Dallas on Sunday, while Batum was missing his fourth straight game with a sore shoulder. Hickson says he's been dealing with a painful lower back for the past several games.

But the rookies got off to an astonishingly fast start, going up 17-8 on Lillard's fadeaway jumper. Lillard banked in a 3-pointer to extend the lead to 22-12 and the Blazers made eight of their first nine shots from the field.

He hit another 3 to make it 35-25 and the Blazers went on to lead 41-33 at the end of the first, their most points in the opening quarter this season.

The Lakers chipped away at the lead and Bryant's long jumper on the baseline closed Los Angeles to 50-48.

The Blazers led 69-61 at the break, but the Lakers opened the second half with a 10-0 run capped by Howard's hook shot to pull ahead 71-69, their first lead of the game. Howard's layup extended the lead to 78-71.

The Blazers were hurt when Claver rolled his ankle late in the third quarter and retreated to the locker room, but they stayed on the Lakers' heels, coming within 86-85 on Eric Maynor's running jumper and pulling in front on Luke Babbitt's 3 pointer.

Maynor's fadeaway put Portland up 95-90.

"It was a very good effort by our team, but unfortunately we couldn't pull it out," Blazers coach Terry Stotts said. "A couple of plays down the stretch could have gone either way, a couple of shots could have gone either way. For the most part, I thought it was a well-played game against a team that's pretty hungry to make the playoffs."

Notes: Combined with the Lakers' 104-96 victory over New Orleans on Tuesday night, it was the first time this season the Lakers had won both games of a back-to-back. ... Lillard was awarded the NBA's Community Assist award for March because of his anti-bullying campaign. He is the fourth rookie to win the honor, and first since Atlanta's Al Horford in 2008. More than 5,000 fans have signed a pledge to help end bullying as part of Lillard's "Respect" program. ... Lillard became second Portland rookie to go over 500 assists. Kelvin Ransey had 555 in the 1980-81 season. ... The Blazers had won three straight and 12 of their last 14 against the Lakers at the Rose Garden.
