The Best Tips on how to Make Cardio exercise FUN with MMA

Cardio...

It's great for the heart, makes us feel wonderful with that incredible endorphin release, and it sheds fat. Along with resistance training, it's an essential half of getting into shape. Gentlemen, without a consistent and effective cardio plan, it's simply impossible to shed that last bit of fat covering up that six-pack and those biceps you've worked so hard to build. Ladies, you just can't get rid of the dreaded pooch or that jiggle between the thighs without it. Cardio exercise is a must. PERIOD,

However, for many of us, it can also be the most boring, drudging task of the day. Sometimes running on a treadmill or an elliptical can make us feel like human hamsters on a wheel, where 20-30 minutes of uninspired cardio goes by in a blur.

As the weeks go by, we do the same routine each and every day. We run at the same tempo, for the same amount of time.... we stay the same weight and feel the same after each and every workout.

We're convinced that we should get in our cardio session for our health, but we certainly do not always enjoy it... and as I've come to learn about human psychology, if we do something because we think we SHOULD rather than because we WANT to, we very rarely improve and often times we give up all together.

Well ladies and gentlemen; I'm here to tell you that your days as a human gerbil are over. There is a solution to cardiovascular exercise that is fun, interesting, engaging, and self empowering. It's called MMA fitness training.

In Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), fighters must be in the most supreme condition as they battle all out at full intensity for 15-25 minutes in the cage with very minimal rest.

They are some of the fastest, strongest and well conditioned human beings on the planet. Not to mention almost all of them are absolutely ripped to shreds, but not in an unattractively bulky way like the monsters of bodybuilding. In my humble opinion, they are built the way we're MEANT to be built. Learn and attractive as well as strong, flexible, and energized.

It only makes sense that if you want an MMA body, it's time to start training like an MMA fighter (and no, you don't have to get punched in the face to train like a fighter...). The best news is that it doesn't take long at all. Because of the length and intensity of an MMA fight, (15-25 minutes) most MMA cardio workouts are no longer than 20 minutes and incorporate the whole body from the shoulders and arms, through the core, all the way down to the quads and calves.

If you have 20 minutes 3 times a week, you can get into shape like an MMA fighter. Apart from technical work (sparring, grappling technique, and hitting the focus mitts) even the most talented fighters like UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre only train cardio for 20 minutes at a time 2-3 times a week.

The whole fitness industry is finally catching on to the idea that MMA style workouts are the best way to get in shape. Georges St. Pierre is on the cover of Men's Health after being on the cover of Maximum Fitness, and Men's Fitness this year. UFC fighter Rich Franklin was on the cover of Muscle and Fitness just a few months ago.

Try out an MMA cardio workout and you'll never set foot on the treadmill again, you'll be shedding fat like a machine, all while improving all aspects of fitness from strength to flexibility in less than a half hour, three times per week.

T-Mobile USA to launch LTE in 2013 using spectrum from AT&T

Android Central

Alongside its fourth quarter operating results, T-Mobile USA has announced plans to significantly expand its network over the next two years, including the launch of its own 4G LTE network. Dubbed the "reinvigorated challenger strategy", the plan outlines the carrier's plans to remain competitive as rival networks grow their LTE coverage in the coming months and years.

In short, Tmo says it'll invest $4 billion in its network, which will go towards "network modernization", including the expansion of existing voice and ("4G" HSPA+) data coverage, as well as the new LTE network. The carrier says it plans to build this new network using spectrum obtained after the collapse of AT&T's buyout bid, as well as freeing up space for LTE in its existing AWS and PCS spectrum . In arriving a little late to the LTE party, Tmo CTO Neville Ray says it'll benefit from a "more mature device ecosystem", likely meaning improved radio efficiency, and in turn better battery life.

T-Mobile may have big plans for 2013, but things weren't exactly rosy during the last quarter of 2011. The network lost over 800,000 subscribers during the last three months of the year, which it attributed to "iPhone 4S launches by three nationwide competitors."

We've got T-Mobile's full press release after the break.

FILE - Indiana Secretary of State Charlie White speaks an interview at his home in Fishers, Ind., in this June 18, 2011 file photo. White was scheduled to be sentenced on voter fraud, perjury, theft and other charges Thursday afternoon Feb. 23, 2012 by Hamilton Superior Court Judge Steven Nation. Defense attorney Carl Brizzi said he would ask that each of the charges be reduced to misdemeanors so White could hold onto his job, but one legal expert said Nation is likely to reject that request. (AP Photo/Darron Cummings, File)

(AP) ? Indiana's ousted top elections official was sentenced Thursday to a year of home detention for six felony convictions that a judge refused to reduce to lesser crimes ? a ruling that, if upheld on appeal, will likely cost him not only his office but also his law license and livelihood.

Hamilton Superior Court Judge Steven Nation said the intentional disregard that Secretary of State Charlie White showed for the law outweighed portrayals of him as a loving father and husband. The judge refused to reduce the six felony convictions to misdemeanors that would have given the 42-year-old Republican a chance to hold onto his office.

"I believe he violated the trust of the people," Nation said.

White told the judge he would appeal the one year's detention on each of the six felonies, to be served concurrently, and Nation stayed the sentence pending that. The judge also fined White $1,000 and ordered him to serve 30 hours of community service.

But White, his wife, and his attorney said his legal problems have cost him much more than part of his freedom and his political and legal career. Defense attorney Carl Brizzi said White and his wife, Michelle, have stopped making mortgage payments on the condo that was at the heart of his legal troubles and likely will lose ownership of it. White said his assets have dwindled to whatever equity he might have in the home and small stock and bank accounts and a 5-year-old, beat-up Jaguar automobile.

"His life is in tatters," Brizzi said.

White said the charges he was convicted of Feb. 4, including perjury and theft, ignored a complicated personal life in which he was trying to raise his 10-year-old son, plan a new marriage and campaign for statewide office in 2010. He said he stayed at his ex-wife's house when he wasn't on the road campaigning and did not live in the condo until after he remarried.

Prosecutors said White listed his ex-wife's address instead of the condo on his voter registration form because he didn't want to give up his Fishers Town Council salary after moving out of the district he was elected to represent.

"I never intentionally meant to do any of the things I was convicted of," White said in a nearly 30-minute statement to the judge, pausing at times to regain his composure.

Nation didn't buy that explanation, and neither did special prosecutors John Dowd, a Republican, and Dan Sigler, a Democrat, who also rejected defense arguments that White was the victim of a political persecution.

"He's wreaked havoc with a statewide office. He's wreaked havoc with the whole election process," Dowd said in court.

White declined to comment on the sentence as he left the court with his wife, walking swiftly to a waiting elevator and saying only, "I'm going to be with my wife. I'm really happy to be with my wife."

Indiana law prohibits public officials convicted of felonies from holding office. White's conviction bars him from reclaiming the job he held onto for more than a year despite calls from Democrats and Republicans, including GOP Gov. Mitch Daniels, for him to step down.

White could be reinstated if his conviction is reversed on appeal.

The appeal isn't the only legal wrangling left in the case. Another battle continues over who will replace him permanently.

Daniels named White's chief deputy, Jerry Bonnet, interim secretary of state after White's conviction, but he isn't expected to make a permanent appointment until the Indiana Supreme Court rules in a civil lawsuit over White's candidacy.

The state Supreme Court has scheduled oral arguments next week in the lawsuit, in which Democrats contend White was never eligible to run for office because he was improperly registered to vote. They want White's candidacy declared invalid so that runner-up Vop Osili, a Democrat who lost to White by about 300,000 votes, can be named to the job, which also oversees business registrations and enforces Indiana's securities laws.

Capability to communicate effectively is essential | SemOifc

Institutions are so strict with their policy in employing employees that carry the abilities needed to do the job effectively and properly. Although they have hired the greatest workers, still they continuously battle in meeting their aims and intentions.

Though, hard skills similar to technical skill are essential to the success of any business, much of the skills required are not technological, but communication competencies. These soft skills will be more necessary than hard skills since these skills involve individual attributes that enhance the efficiency, interactions and career aims of persons. Based on some, hard skills fascinate the employer to job interview you, while soft abilities make the company hire you. The latter is necessary in the workplace on account of 3 factors.

Very first, a healthy working atmosphere can be the result if Importance of communication in the workplace is evident for any active member of work personnel. Usually, workers use their skills to connect. Regardless if they have their coffee break or in the event they are attending the meeting with their boss presiding, the capacity to communicate is there. If lousy communication can be found between employees, there is a leaning that conflict may arise, which sometimes head into some staff members not making it to work or separation among the workers. If this scenario will remain, the productivity of the workers will be influenced. Nonetheless, creating an intimate bond among staff can happen if they are in a wholesome working environment. Even if, companies? restrict their employees from forming personalized relationships among them, the employers can?t keep it from occurring mainly because the employees are sociable beings, and with valuable communication the employees can cause a strong rapport among them. With a healthy working environment and relationship linking the employees all together, jobs are completed effectively and economically.

Secondly, the capability to communicate effectively is critical for communication between the leaders and personnel. It is said that the managers? insufficient competence to communicate with the employees is one of the aspects that lead employees giving up their responsibility or finding other firms. The feeling of some employers that paycheck is the only element that employees consider is not correct each time. You will discover workers who would instead work in a company with lesser salary if the manager understands how to express his ideas to them rather than in those company?s whose wage is high, however the immediate supervisors have bad desire for importance of communication in the workplace. In a nutshell, how the employer takes care of his employees is one among the things for the workers to be pleased with their duty.

Finally, importance of communication in the workplace capabilities are vital mainly because these abilities are required to guarantee that customers are very happy with the products or services that the business provides. If the employees? proficiency in communication is weak, they can have difficulty in dealing with shoppers. If this will be the circumstance, the customers will will no longer patronize the services of the enterprise, which can result anyone to lose your job and also the company?s earnings.

Absolutely, efficient communication skills within the business are important for the growth of the company and the fulfillment of the employees. Lacking these competencies within the workers may result to the company?s personal bankruptcy and staff to lose their jobs. It?s not just the workers that should really possess these capabilities, workers should likewise have these abilities to ensure the business will succeed.

Viral Bronchitis | New Health and Fitness

New Health And Fitness.Org - Health Information You Can Use

A persistent hacking cough lets a person know that he or she might have bronchitis. Acute bronchitis usually lasts for a week or two. If the bronchial tubes become permanently inflamed, a patient may develop chronic bronchitis.

Do antibiotics work for either kind of bronchitis lung? No. Almost all cases of bronchitis are viral infections so antibiotics do not do anything to help cure bronchitis. How Affair Sites Are Ruining Marriage

You may have heard this excuse: Humans weren?t meant to be monogamous. ?It?s unnatural?. The ?theory? behind this excuse is that monogamy was acceptable when we only lived to be 30, but our lifespans have roughly tripled, so we can?t be expected to stay with just one person all those years. And as if it weren?t bad enough that unfaithful spouses have tried to justify their actions with this nonsense, online affair sites are cropping up every day and promoting the same idea. If you?re not familiar with these services, buckle your seat belt before you read any further.

Hundreds of sites exist that not only encourage married people to have affairs, but make money off the prospect by charging for membership. They?re just like online dating sites, except they cater to married members, and use taglines like, ?Life is short. Have an affair.? which comes from the best known of these sites, Ashley Madison. That site, and others like it, tell members it?s perfectly okay to be unfaithful to their spouses or partners.

With stories of celebrity affairs in the news so often, it?s easy to become numb to the sadness and devastation that infidelity causes. Ashton cheated on Demi. Tiger cheated on Elin. It?s been happening for years. One of the biggest scandals of the late ?50s was The Affair between Elizabeth Taylor and the still-married Eddie Fisher. The two eventually married, and while Taylor was known for a while as a home-wrecker, the scandal did little to diminish her popularity as an actress and celebrity.

As a society, we receive mixed messages about marriage and infidelity. We know it?s wrong, yet there don?t seem to be any real consequences outside possibly losing the relationship that is compromised by the affair, which is a risk borne by the adulterer alone. Even President Clinton was found to have been unfaithful (and he wasn?t the first president to be so), and yet he continued to be married and run the country like it was no big deal. Is this the message we want to send to the next generation?

Despite these very public stories of infidelity, they actually have little effect the every day married couple. Not so with affair sites. They bring infidelity much closer to home, offering ways to give in to temptation, and assisting in the endeavor. One site, Married Affair Guide, gives people instructions on how to have an affair, how to keep it secret, and even how to hide affair communications to avoid getting caught.

The argument could be made that if someone is going to be unfaithful, they?re going to do it whether they seek it out online or not. But does that justify sites like this that make it easy and create a safe environment for adulterers to find each other? Some may find it similar to sites that explain how to make a bomb. If someone wants to blow something up, they?ll find a way?but should we make it easy for people to blow up their marriages and destroy lives?

Some of these affair sites, like Discreet Adventures, even affiliate programs that allow website owners to earn commissions on every person they send to these sites seeking affairs. They offer an incentive for people to encourage infidelity in exchange for payment. Can you imagine that being done in person? Someone handing someone else a check for turning to the person beside them and saying, ?Hey, want to have an affair? Here?s how!? It?s unthinkable.

The sad truth is that these sites will continue to exist and proliferate as long as people continue to use them, and they?re showing no signs of slowing growth. People who still believe in monogamy and want their relationships to succeed need to be even more vigilant about threats to their marriages, which more than ever include affair sites.

Riverside County supervisors reject massive Temecula quarry

The fastest-growing county in California rejected a massive, mountaintop rock quarry Thursday that supporters called an essential source of the ingredients that fed the region's economic ascent.

In the end, however, neighborhood objections to increased traffic, possible health hazards and environmental destruction won out, a rare outcome in the pro-development frontier of the Inland Empire.

Fierce opposition in Temecula, a city known for its vineyard-covered valley and rock-ribbed conservative politics, persuaded the Riverside County Board of Supervisors to vote down the proposed rock mine by a 3-2 vote, despite the promise of hundreds of new blue-collar jobs to the recession-flattened region.

Temecula City Councilman Jeff Comerchero called the vote a "watershed" moment for a county that had been used as Southern California's back lot for mining, landfills, prisons and other less glamorous necessities.

"I don't think the county of Riverside was strong enough politically or economically to really understand our image, of what we wanted to be, 20 years ago,'' Comerchero said. "This vote says that we really do have the right to determine what happens in our communities.''

Veteran Inland Empire economist John Husing, a consultant for the mining company, offered a less charitable assessment. He said the influx of upscale housing in Riverside and San Bernardino counties over the last decade coincided with rising opposition to major mines, jails and similar employers ? sources of blue-collar jobs in a region where nearly half the workforce has only a high school diploma.

"The people who moved out here think of themselves as upper crust,'' Husing said. "And the NIMBY (Not in My Back Yard) attitude is very strong.''

Watsonville-based Granite Construction had proposed a 414-acre rock mine, known as Liberty Quarry, on a mountain that looms over the 15 Freeway in the southwest corner of the county, an upscale suburban haven that has attracted thousands of new families drawn by the quiet neighborhoods, good schools and gentle hills east of the Santa Ana Mountains.

The company would have mined about 270 million tons of granite over 75 years, supplying building material to northern San Diego County and southwest Riverside County.

Four days of marathon testimony and deliberations drew busloads of union members in favor of the mine and busloads of Temecula community groups against it.

"There are just too many uncertainties to me,'' said Supervisor John Tavaglione, whose district includes several similar mines in Corona.

Tavaglione appeared to be the swing vote against the project, siding with Supervisors Jeff Stone of Temecula and Bob Buster of Riverside. Voting in favor were Supervisors John Benoit of Indio and Marion Ashley of Perris.

In a statement, the company said it was "very disappointed by today's decision by the board as the environmental studies clearly show this project would be good for Riverside County.''

Gary Johnson, project manager for the proposed quarry, said one option for Granite may be to submit a revised proposal.

Granite won support from business leaders and chamber of commerce groups outside the city in part by stressing that the quarry would create 99 mining-related jobs and hundreds of more indirect jobs with local suppliers and support companies.

The argument was not lost on the supervisors, who oversee a county decimated by the economic downtown and a 12.5% unemployment rate, one of the highest in California. Earlier this month, medical device manufacturer Abbott Labs, the Temecula area's largest employer, laid off 300 workers.

Roger Wright, an unemployed 29-year-old laborer who lives a mile east of the proposed mine site, told the supervisors earlier this week that he was two weeks away from losing his house and car.

"To say we are currently scraping by is an understatement,'' Wright said. "We, like so many others in our situation, need the project to happen.''

Opponents included the city, Temecula wineries, local school districts, the regional tourism council, area avocado growers and the local chapter of the Sierra Club.

The Pechanga Band of Luise?o Indians also launched an aggressive campaign against the mine, which would be a few hundred yards from the reservation and loom over the tribe's four-star resort casino.

Tribal Chairman Mark Macarro said Granite's proposed mine was on a mountain where Luise?o people believe all life was created, akin to the Garden of Eden.

"We only have one creation site. Only one," Macarro told the supervisors shortly before the vote. "Once it's destroyed, once it's eviscerated by a mine ... it's gone."

Oscar awards to soccer cheats!

Moussa Dembele, Martin Hansson, Gervasio Nunez, Osman Chaves

By JOHN LEICESTER

updated 4:09 a.m. ET Feb. 17, 2012

PARIS - Clearly, the Oscar will go to the wrong guy. George Clooney, Brad Pitt, best actor? Pah! What about Dani Alves or Bryan Carrasco?

If those names don't sound familiar then, like Hollywood's academy, you've not been paying attention. You don't need to sit in a dark room with popcorn to see great acting. It is showing now at soccer stadiums around the world. Players who pretend an opponent attacked them, who suddenly drop dead only to make Lazarus-like recoveries moments later, who writhe like a tub of eels in faked agony on the field, these are the thespians who give soccer a bad name.

The aim, of course, is to con referees, to swing a game by getting opponents cautioned or sent off or by winning undeserved penalties and free kicks. Cheating, pure and simple, and a blight on the sport.

Not all pros stoop so low. Lionel Messi is their standard-bearer. Because of his speed and skill, Barcelona's little forward attracts more than his share of nasty tackles. But rarely does the Argentine make a song and dance of them.

Not all soccer actors act well. Type "Hamit Altintop worst dive ever" into YouTube. Not only did the Turkey midfielder's "Help! I've lost all control of my legs!" plunge in Croatia's penalty box on Nov. 11 fail to fool referee Felix Brych, but the slow motion replays made Altintop look silly for attempting such a stunt.

Soccer could combat this dark art on three fronts. Referees should yellow card ham-actors more frequently (Altintop's dramatics went unpunished); soccer bosses must become intolerant of such cheating; and flagrant offenders should be pointed out and shamed into changing their ways.

Or be forced to get their actor's card.

Working on the principle that Academy Award organizers cast their net too narrowly by looking only at film actors, we assembled a jury of crack Associated Press sports reporters to select our own Oscar winner from soccer. Feel free to email the address below if you don't like our choice or have your own winner.

Without further ado, our nominees for Best Actor/Actress in soccer, 2011, are:

?Alves, Champions League semifinal, April 27. Think of Willem Dafoe's death scene in "Platoon." Screaming, mouth agape, the Barcelona defender acrobatically spun to ground, clutching his right calf muscle, after he and Real Madrid's Pepe went for a loose ball with raised legs. Like the Zapruder film of U.S. President John F. Kennedy's assassination, the slow-mo was scrutinized across the soccer world for clues: Did Pepe actually touch Alves?

Real Madrid's almost frame-by-frame post-mortem ? http://tinyurl.com/6hqa7rd ? convincingly suggested not only that Pepe was innocent but that Alves wasn't the only Barcelona player who hammed it that night.

Referee Wolfgang Stark sent Pepe off. Messi then scored twice. And that, pretty much, sealed Barcelona's place in the final, which it won, too. This ticked all the boxes of standout soccer acting: It must be deceptive and effective and, if possible, be performed on the biggest stage.

?Gervasio Nunez, Europa League group stage, Oct. 20. Pushed on the shoulder by Fulham's Mousa Dembele, the Argentine midfielder for Polish side Wisla Krakow pretended he had been thumped in the face and collapsed. Referee Martin Hansson bought it, Dembele trudged off, Wisla turned its one-man advantage into a 1-0 win. "Of course, we will never complain after a red card," said Fulham manager Martin Jol before going on to complain. "It was a push on the shoulder, after being kicked," he said. "You shouldn't raise your hand. He (Dembele) pushed him on the shoulder and you shouldn't do that. The referee gave us a red card, but we felt hard done by."

?Erika, Women's World Cup quarterfinal, July 10. More worthy of a Razzie than an Oscar, because this gamesmanship backfired. Minutes away from qualifying for the semifinals, Brazil pulled all the old tricks to preserve its 2-1 lead over the United States, including wasting time. With a dramatic roll for added effect, Brazil's defender laid down in front of her own goal, clutching her back. Precious seconds passed as medics arrived with a gurney to cart her away. Then, behold! A miraculous recovery! She sprinted back on, to boos and whistles from the crowd. Referee Jacqui Melksham wasn't duped. She showed Erika a yellow card and added three additional minutes to the clock, just enough for Abby Wambach to head in the equalizing goal that sent the game to a penalty shootout, won by the United States.

If Erika hadn't stalled, would Wambach have had time to rescue U.S. hopes?

?Peter Wisgerhof, Johan Cruyff Shield, July 30. Not deceptive, not effective, but Monty Pythonesque. In this match between the Dutch Cup winners and Dutch league champions, the captain of FC Twente looked like a mountain goat skipping over a rock or a frog on takeoff as he jumped into the air and rolled onto the ground after a tickle of a tackle from Ajax defender Daley Blind. To his credit, Wisgerhof later laughed at himself. "The worst dive of the match was definitely mine," Dutch websites quoted him as saying. "I felt something, but fell much later. Why didn't I get a yellow card? I quickly told the ref I'm a defender and don't even know how to fall."

But the Oscar goes to ...

?Carrasco, South American Under-20 Championship, Feb. 12. This cheeky Chilean is our runaway winner. Such ingenuity! The midfielder plumbed new depths by grabbing an opponent's arm and whacking himself in the face with it, and then collapsing. You'll not tire of the video, with hilarity from commentators Nicolas Nardini and Jorge Nazar: http://tinyurl.com/4mz67te

"It could only have been better had he injured himself, knocking himself out, perhaps," said our jury member Steve Wade, AP Sports Writer in Argentina. "This is the classic 'picaro' character of 16th century Spanish literature, the rascal seeking every advantage."

Like all the best actors, Carrasco had done his homework.

"It was necessary to do it because we were losing 1-0 and we needed to win to qualify," he told a TV interviewer.

"I do it in practice," he added. "The coach sees it and says: 'Hey, what are you guys doing fighting over there?'"

Drama, comedy and a villain all in one. Even George and Brad would be impressed.

Genetic information provided by a large group of specially-designed mice could pave the way to faster human health discoveries and transform the ways people battle and prevent disease.

In 15 papers published Feb. 16 in the Genetics Society of America journals Genetics and G3:Genes/Genomes/Genetics, researchers from North Carolina State University, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, The Jackson Laboratory and other universities and labs across the globe highlight a new genetic resource that could aid development of more effective treatments for any number of human diseases.

The resource, known as the Collaborative Cross (CC), is a reference manual of genetic variation contained in hundreds of specially-bred mice and their genetic sequences. The CC mice have much more genetic variation than normal lab mice, and thus more closely mirror the genetic complexity found in humans.

Moreover, the mice and their genetic sequences will be publicly available, allowing researchers around the world to work with mice that have particular genetic variations.

"If you can't mimic the genetic variation in people, you can't necessarily use mouse findings to understand more about human disease," says Dr. David Threadgill, professor and department head of genetics at NC State who originally proposed the idea for the CC project a decade ago and who serves as one of the project leaders. Threadgill is also a member of the University of North Carolina's Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Threadgill developed the idea for the CC in order to harness the power of so-called whole genome studies that examine all genes at once instead of subsets of genes. Complex interactions between large numbers of genes frequently govern traits and behavior. Learning more about these interactions could help researchers tease out links between certain genes and certain diseases, for example.

In one of the 15 papers, Threadgill and corresponding author Dr. Francis S. Collins, director of the National Institutes of Health, identify key genes involved in red and white blood cell counts and red blood cell volume. These hematological parameters are important indicators of health and disease.

###

Project leaders include Dr. Fernando Pardo-Manuel de Villena of the UNC Department of Genetics, who is a member of UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, and Dr. Gary Churchill at The Jackson Laboratory. The international consortium participating in the development of the CC project includes NC State, UNC-Chapel Hill, The Jackson Laboratory, Tel Aviv University, Oxford University and Geniad/Australia. The mice are housed and "curated" at UNC-Chapel Hill.

The research was supported by grants from the National Institutes of Health; Ellison Medical Foundation; National Science Foundation; Australian Research Council; and the Wellcome Trust. The University Cancer Research Fund from the state of North Carolina also provided important funding.

Why Your State Thinks You're a Tax Cheater | G7Finance.com ...

TaxesMost people pay their taxes voluntarily. With at least one type of tax, though, millions of Americans break the law every year ? and many of them probably never realize it. And now, states in desperate need of more tax revenue are trying to do something about that.

Online shopping has become one of the fastest-growing parts of the retail industry. Over the past holiday season, online sales rose 15% to a whopping $37.2 billion, according to comScore, setting an all-time record. On 10 separate days, sales online hit or exceeded $1 billion.

Savings and convenience were definitely two of the biggest reasons why shoppers stayed in front of their computers instead of taking to the malls during November and December. However, a big part of the price advantage that drives customers to Amazon.com (AMZN) and other online retailers comes from the fact that in many states, online retailers don?t collect sales tax. That gives them an advantage over brick-and-mortar retailers in the state, an advantage that many increasingly see as unfair. That?s what?s behind the drive to force Amazon and others to start collecting sales taxes from customers no matter where those customers live.

States are focusing their attention on online retailers because it?s easier to go after the big fish. But in reality, when you make an online purchase, you?re typically breaking the law of your state if you don?t report it and pay whatever use tax may apply.

Getting More Use

The 45 states that impose sales taxes all also have what?s known as use tax provisions. Basically, the use tax is meant to cover for cases where the state didn?t get to collect the appropriate sales tax. So if you go out-of-state to buy something ? perhaps to one of the five sales-tax-free states ? you technically owe use tax on your purchases.

As a practical matter, it?s always been hard to enforce use taxes. One report from Orange County, Calif., revealed that 99.7% of residents failed to pay use tax on products that they bought out of state.

But in recent years, many states have added lines on their income tax returns covering uncollected sales and use taxes. In total, 26 states include a declaration of use-tax liability on their returns ? meaning that if you fail to mention such a liability, your signed return can be used against you on an audit.

More interesting, however, are some creative provisions that a few states are using to boost revenues. Rather than expecting you to keep track of all your online purchases over the course of the year, some states offer taxpayers so-called ?safe harbor? provisions for meeting their use tax obligations.

California, for instance, lets taxpayers pay 0.07% of their adjusted gross income ? amounting to $70 for someone earning $100,000 in a given year. Michigan uses a similar approach based on 0.08% of income, but it expressly doesn?t apply for purchases of more than $1,000, for which taxpayers have to pay additional tax on top of the calculated amount.

Will You Volunteer to Pay?

Given the difficulty that state tax agencies would have in enforcing even these beefed-up use tax provisions, you can expect most of the focus to remain on finding ways to force businesses to collect sales tax on the states? behalf. The big question then will be whether losing what often amounts to a 5% to 10% ?discount? on online purchases pushes shoppers back toward traditional retail stores.

Nevertheless, if states do decide to make examples of individual taxpayers, not knowing about the use tax laws won?t be any defense. With interest and penalties potentially applying, you might prefer to take advantage of the safe harbor provisions that some states are offering rather than rolling the dice.

Direct Mail Marketing a Look Into Evolution With Technology | THE ...

Barron?s online dictionary defines direct mail marketing as ?making records of the names and addresses of people who have a common characteristic.? Direct mail marketing is this and so much more. Direct mail marketing is the most used and highly thought of marketing technique for businesses to produce new business.

Direct mail marketing lists can be custom fit to suit your businesses marketing needs. Direct mail marketing lists come in many type including consumer and business mailing lists. Your direct mail marketing list can be custom built using a variety of geographical, demographic, and firmographic selections.

Direct mail marketing has been used by businesses to get their promotional message in the hands of a targeted audience for decades. Throughout the years direct mail marketing and grown and changed and branched out from the traditional postal direct mail marketing forum.

The first direct mail marketing lists contained only name and address. As the world of direct mail marketing has grown and the ways that businesses market themselves have evolved from direct mail, direct mail marketing lists are now available with phone and email addresses. This will allow for cross marketing efforts such as direct mail marketing and email.

With the invention of the telephone, direct mail marketing branched out a bit as telemarketing or marketing over the telephone became a widely used forum. Similar to direct mail marketing in its approach, this type of marketing made consumers have to make a choice right then and there with heavy convincing and prodding from the operator. Over the years this practice became an annoyance to consumers and the federal enacted a ?Do Not Call Act? banning telemarketers from contacting direct mail marketing contacts that had signed up to the list.

Computers and the age of the internet also changed direct mail marketing and caused it to branch out on many directions. First, email marketing became a common place forum for businesses that used direct mail marketing to reach out to new consumers via the internet. More recently the social media marketing component of direct mail marketing has emerged completely changing the commonplace practices that have made direct mail marketing what it is.

So when we speak about direct marketing, we have to take into account following methods. First one is obviously the traditional ?mail to address? one. Second one is direct telephone marketing, if we taking into account chronological evolution of technology. With advent of Internet came E-mail marketing. E-mail marketing itself is a science and is always considered as an integral part of Direct marketing. In addition E-mail marketing is considered as highly effective because of the immediate call to action and higher response rates. And then came the latest Social media marketing word, which is also a form of direct marketing.

With all the changes to direct mail marketing over the years and the new branches that have formed it still continues to remain the most used forum for marketing your business due to its direct approach, easy measurability, and high return.

New web tool to improve accuracy of global land cover maps

New web tool to improve accuracy of global land cover maps [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 14-Feb-2012
[ | E-mail | Share Share ]

Contact: Leane Regan
regan@iiasa.ac.at
43-066-444-30368
International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis

An interactive web tool has been developed to improve the accuracy and extent of global land use and forest cover information. The new 'Geo-Wiki' uses Google Earth and information provided by a global network of volunteers to fill in 'data gaps' and to verify existing land cover information. Developers this week have launched a Geo-Wiki competition to raise awareness of the tool and to encourage community involvement in environmental monitoring.

Access to accurate land cover data is increasingly important as nations strive to balance issues such as agricultural production for food security with, for example, their objectives regarding climate change or biodiversity conservation. While much land cover information exists it is often conflicting, partially due to the scale at which it is collected, the uneven coverage of the data, or the different definitions of the land cover classes used.

"Global land cover information available to policymakers and the research community today is derived from remote sensing," says Dr Steffen Fritz, leader of the Geo-Wiki development team and research leader from the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA). "While there are several excellent regional and national land cover datasets already available that capture some basic information, there are still many regions where the information derived from satellite sources is conflicting, or inconsistent, across the datasets."

"This means we cannot be certain of the spatial distribution of deforestation, how much land is being used for cropping or, for example, the extent of urbanization. This has implications for how regions assess such things as their carbon storage potential, how much land could be available for food production or biofuel expansion, decisions that are becoming increasingly important as climate change and food security concerns escalate," says Dr Fritz.

The new competition aims to encourage volunteers to log on to the site, identify where they are in the world, view the information already available via the Google map and, to the best of their ability, provide their interpretation of the land cover in the area. To participate in the competition visit: http://competition.geo-wiki.org/login.php.

Geo-Wiki brings information from multiple sources together into one platform making it easier to compare information and enabling, for the first time, validation of the land cover and other significant information by volunteers. The project aims at producing a hybrid land cover map which is more accurate than any current individual product can provide. The rationale and technical underpinning for the Geo-Wiki are outlined in the January issue (online version) of the international journal Environmental Monitoring and Software (see below).

Geo-Wiki uses Google Earth as the delivery platform and crowd-sourcing as the mechanism for collecting and verifying land cover data. Crowd-sourcing leverages the immense power of web technologies to capture data from a large and undefined group of people. Social media channels such as Twitter and Facebook also offer enormous opportunities for capturing information across vast regions.

In the case of Geo-Wiki, when a volunteer registers, information is collected on where they live, their profession, and their local knowledge. They are asked to review locations or 'hotspots' - where data is missing or where there is disagreement over the land cover. The data inserted by a volunteer is 'quality assessed' via control points. This involves the use of an internal scoring mechanism which compares known validations with those provided by the volunteers, and hence allows the Geo-Wiki team to identify those users that are able to provide high quality validations. Data is also systematically compared with input from other users as another way of assessing data quality. Volunteers are also encouraged to submit photographs of the location to help in the validation of the land cover. The majority of registered volunteers to date have some professional association with remote sensing.

Once submitted the land cover information recorded in Geo-wiki is freely available for decision makers, land managers, or any member of the community anywhere in the world.

Several additional Geo-Wikis have also been developed. An agriculture Geo-Wiki aims to provide the most detailed coverage to date of the type and extent of agriculture, while urban Geo-Wiki (urban.geo-wiki.org) helps users to better understand the percentage of the earth's surface under urbanization. Current estimates of the total land surface classified as urban vary from between 0.05% to 3% of the Earth's surface, a significant disagreement that the Geo-Wiki team hope to reduce. Other Geo-Wiki 'branches' currently developed include biomass cover, human impact, archeology, and regional Geo-Wiki.

"Geo-Wiki attempts to bring information together on many aspects of the Earth's surface, this information is primarily associated with how humans have managed or modified landscapes and ecosystems. To address the many challenges global communities are dealing with, such as climate change or food security, we need multidisciplinary responses. Policymakers thus need information that is not only as accurate as possible but that is holistic we cannot deal with climate change, independent of how we deal with food security or energy security. Geo-Wiki is one tool to start bridging this information gap, integrating information, and, ultimately, we believe supporting the development of more integrated policy and management decisions," said Dr Fritz.

Geo-Wiki is a relatively new tool, with approximately 700 registered users world-wide. However, in a short time these volunteers have validated over 55, 000 areas (or validation points) equivalent to an area of about 12-15,000km2.

Geo-Wiki draws on the global network of satellites and technologies that form GEOSS, the Global Earth Observation System of Systems. GEOSS links existing and planned observing systems around the world to support the development of new systems. The aim is ultimately to improve the benefit society gains from earth observations by improving forecasting in areas such as deforestation, environmental disasters, disease outbreak, climate change or mapping ecosystem change.

To maximize the value of Geo-Wiki the developers are encouraging people to get involved. In a similar way to the immensely popular bird watching 'eBird project' (ebird.org) - which has some 48 million records of bird sightings globally - the value of Geo-Wiki will be realized through the involvement of the global community.
